Can be a real drag to get tapped deep enough. Since it is captive behind the distributor I often just leave it as a core plug - it can't "pop" with the distributor in the way. If you decide to tap it make sure the new plug goes all the way in - test fit a distributor in there before starting assembly. I often have to take the NPT plug and trim the face back in a lathe on OE, Genesis and Pond blocks to get adequate clearance.
I live and dream to tap fe blocks--you can enlarge the hole in front of the block enough to use a extension with a socket or sometimes grind down the end of the tap so a 3/8 extension- the square end -will fit but I finally broke down and bought a 5-6 inch long tap and that is the ticket--I got one from ENCO but they are readily available--you do need to tap and check tap and check-- use a distributer and make sure it will pass the plug--some seem to go in deep enough and not into the lifter bore and some I have had to grind on the plug a little. lightly hone the lifter bore afterwards as it will have a burr

and tool is less expensive then buying a longer tap or you can try pressing a nut on the square end of the tap that will fit thru block and tap using the appropriate socket.Use a good quality pipe plug made by the USA company because the lesser quality off-shore plugs tend to twist-off or self-destruct when you attempt a future R&R. DO NOT use thread locker to seal plug.
excellent advise. But---some years ago, we decided to cut off a pipe plug short enough that only a light touch with a rotary file will get it clear of the diz hole. Then cut a screwdriver slot across and put a light dab of Teflon 'goo' on the threads and screw it home.

Since that oil passage hole is a chore to get tapped properly, I always just leave the stock style soft plug in there. As mentioned, it can`t come out, by the time the oil gets to that plug, there isn`t really all that much pressure left anyhow, plus if you plug the lifter feed holes when using solid lifters (like I do), there is NO oil pressure there.
