I have been looking on the 428 Registry at original piston part numbers and these are not listed. I picked up these standard 428 pistons with another engine and kept them for my self. I know they are just cast aluminum but my build is going to be 100% stock (no bashing lol the Cougar is for going fast)Here is the part numberand the questions are any good? and are they rare by chance? thanks

Is your block new?

NOS pistons usually are not worth much because in most cases you don't have a new block so they can't be of any use to you.

Actually you have have the cylinder walls coated and have them returned to standard. Correct date code blocks are too hard to come by.

Extreme Levils of Absurdity. New Old Stock Pistons?

December 9 2008, 6:45 AM

I had discussion with a pro in Thoroughbred Mustang Parts, he mentioned that when buying a 428CJ block always inspect for cracking up the mains however he added a cracked block is fine for a Thoroughbred Mustang show car that will rarely if ever even be started. If an engines that hip on being NOS parts why would anyone drive it and risk messing up all the other NOS Parts from fan belts to brake pads?

I've got a few cans of mid-60s Ford Motor Company blue can ATF if you need to fill that auto trans or power steering pump beside that engine with the NOS Pistons. How about some genuine 60s air for the tires?

Royce the short block I have is still assembled (loaded), has never been apart and is standard of course. I was hoping to use the new ones I have if the block does not need boring. BBstang I ask only because I have them and if they are sufficient for pleasure driving why not use them. You are reading too much into the NOS thing here. Just trying to save 400 bucks for another set of pistons but thanks for the OTHER recommendations LOL

I don't know about numbers, so cannot say if they are anything special or not. Since Ford did build or supply them I think is reasonable to assume that they are at least "adequate",lol, for normal driving. As to using them in your stock bore block, its just a matter of wear and tolerances. If your bore is still within reasonable spec and does not need boring, use the new pistons. I don't see any other issue. Good luck, RonW

NOS

One thing I'd keep in mind using NOS pistons from that era - I would have each one measured and then compared to each individual bore to determine if they will provide proper piston-to-wall clearance. Only then could an informed decision be made on usability.
