bellhousing

Got a bellhousing question--I am putting a t-5 behind an FE engine--I know I know it will never last! Anyway I got an adapter thru mustang supply house--bolted up fine. I thought I understood the big block.small block tranny situation and maybe I do but I guess my bellhousing is a truck housing which seems to be about 1/2 inch deeper than my car bellhousings.Input shafts are that about the same 1/2 inch difference--why doesnt that negate the need to shorten the input by that same 1/2 inch???-Of course I will mock it all up and double check measurements. Seems I recall some-one saying DO NOT run a truck bellhousing--is there a reason I am missing not to run a truck bellhousing??

The truck bell is the same depth as the smallblock which i'm sure is what the adapter was meant for if it's about 3/4" thick.

you don't use a truck bell with a big block trans if you can help it. You have a smaalblock trans so use the adapter on teh truck bell and you are good to go. Hawkrod

T-5

i used a t-5 for about 18 mo in a 67 mustang with a 406fe, with no issues you can ruin anybodys transmission if you want to. The motor is out now to put in a 91 mustang aod (knee problems).

t-5

December 9 2008, 8:25 AM

im using a 4 cyl t-5 with a 3.97 1st gear and a 3.00 rear axle in a 68 mustang with a 302. everyone said that was stupid and the trans would snap on the first try. ive beat the crap outta it so far so good. the way i see it guys run t-5 on 302 engines that run 10 sec et so why wouldent it last behind a mild fe. any trans can be broke. breaking one might be the fun part as long as you dont get killed from it.

Define "beating the crap out of it" please. If you only run street tires, especially with an open rear end, you can easily burn the tires off without putting much of a load on the transmission. It`s power, weight, traction and gearing that punish a transmission. If the tires are freewheeling, no real load, right. As for T5`s, I ran the same stock 5.0 Mustang T5 in my old street strip 302 Fairmont (low 13`s normally, it went high 12`s with higher launch RPM`s) for 5 years and never hurt the trans. This car normally 60 footed in the 1.8`s. When I first built my 85 Mustang 302 Stock eliminator car, I also ran T5`s for the first year. Even though the Mustang was 200 lbs lighter, and only ran 1/2 second quicker, it also left quite a bit harder, and I broke both T5`s within the first year, including badly bending the mainshaft. With street tires it`s likely none of this breakage would have occured. I don`t know how many 10 second Mustangs are running stock T5`s in your area, but around here I`ve seen 1 car do that 1 time only. And it certainly wasn`t a 4 cyl. trans.
