Hot starting problem

Brand new Genesis 427 side oiler sounds nice when started cold. Won't start again until it is cold. I know the motor is new and will run hotter for a while but I need the beast to start hot. It is a work truck. New Hitachi starter, new battery, Ron Francis wiring, new voltage regulator. Using solenoid on Hitachi. 2 gauge ground to block. Need advice.

Whats the spec on cam and what is your initial timing?

Also is it Hyd, solid, roller cam? Your timing might be to far advanced! Just asking...

Make sure

Your float levels are set correctly as well. Don't want to over look the basics. JMHO

Cam and carb

December 7 2008, 11:00 AM

I don't know what the cam stats are. It was built by Dennis Sowder in Elizabethtown, KY and I cannot find him now.

The timing has been fiddled with by the mechanic (in computer terms, I'm just the user) and the problem persists.

As to fuel in the bowls, I think it has an aluminum spacer. Should I use a phenolic one?

Need more info. Does it crank and not start or does it not crank?

It will crank until the battery dies without starting when it is hot. It cranks slowly when cold, but it does start.

my experience

December 7 2008, 9:35 AM

I had a troublesome, hot start problem with my side oiler, Mustang. Also stumbling in stop & go traffic. Finally figured it out. The heat radiated from the Super Comp headers was boiling the fuel within the carb bowls.
Somewhat solved the problem by adding 1-inch phenolic spacers, ceramic coating the headers and changing the fan blade. I HATE clutch fans! Installed a fixed pitch blade used on short track, modifieds. Get as much air flow under the hood as you can. May even consider an electric fan to run during cool down while parked.

Thanks, I will try the phenolic spacer. It has a brand new 19x23 two row radiator with two electric fans and the temp guage indicates about 180 when it is too hot to start.

not the coolant

December 7 2008, 1:26 PM

The issue is not the coolant temperature. It's the fuel bowls soaking up all the underhood heat. The fuel percolates and floods the motor. Pull a plug next time it wont start hot. Bet it's fouled & wet. Also consider a hotter plug and MSD blaster coil. I gave up on those concours correct, yellow top coils.
