Ford FE gear drive

I've never heard of, or seen, one of these. It's being advertized as a FORD set-up. It just doesn't look like something that Ford would have produced back in the day. Anybody here know anything about it?

I always wonder about 'wondering' posts that appear when certain ebay vendors are selling.

Personally, just going by the picture above, it looks kinda chintzy, almost like it's made out of aluminum plate (bendy). But that's all I know or care. I personally think they're worse than useless, and I personally don't appreciate your juvenile avatar either. But both appeal to the same people I think. All just my personal opinions of course.

I've got one that came with a box o' parts, basically free, which just shows that they're not real valued in the real world. The world of 'rare' parts people I don't know about. Good luck with the sale.

You are right. It does look sleazy.

This does look a lot like a way to hype a crappy product in an ebay auction. These posts are not appreciated in the tech forum.

Re: Ford FE gear drive

I must have missed these in the late 60's when they were being sold thru Ford(??!). Guess they kept them 'under the counter' or, 'on the back shelf' and you had to ask for them!!

Looks like Rube Goldberg was the designer of that piece...

I didn't know he was on the Ford payroll back in the 60's.....

I remember

December 6 2008, 1:11 PM

the set up with twin idlers "Pete Jackson". He's still around but doesn't manufacture any "FE" gears. Guess I should have got a set back in the 70's when I first saw them. I think it's a good set up,seems better than the single Idler and all the brackets you have to get behind the timing cover....JMO

forum faux pas

December 5 2008, 7:19 PM

Guys, I guess my first post here should have been an intro so here goes; My name is Steve, I've lurked for a long time but never had an FE to work on until now. I'm building a 428 for BDR 687. KK stroker, Edlbrock heads etc. BTW I'm using a billet timing set with torrington bearing from Pump builder, I was just curious about the BS in the ebay ad. I had posted the same question on another forum and didn't get any info so I decided to try here since this is where allot of old FE knowledge resides.

As to the smart *** comments about me being the seller and so forth; If you were as web-savvy as you are quick to condemn, then you'd have found that that was quite unlikely. I do use ebay where my user name is the same as it is here and on CC. I really couldn't care any less what you think about my avatar. I like it. If it's not your cup of tea, then so be it. Maybe you can find a nice banana hammock picture somewhere more to your liking. So lighten up Francis.

Steve

I love seeing the "SHIT" Any part that was built for an FE is always cool to me

December 5 2008, 8:54 PM

The star-spangled not-exactly-to-sharp-an-idea stuff is a learning tool at the very least. The wizz of this wacky stuff award goes to Pro/Stock Paul but you go to admit he did knock at least a few out of the park by bringing the Cleve to FE Adaptor Intake to market and er of course his LOL through bolt oil system.

It would be neat to see a gear driven cam vs a belt drive on a dyno that is Murphy's Law does not shatter the cam.

Heck if we have funky rules against posting wacky stuff you'd miss things like that eight two barrel intake.

An old PSE part, eh? Good investigating.

December 6 2008, 5:31 PM

PSE parts have a reputation for dropping out on the dragstrip, but they have historic entertainment value like no other FE part. Wonder if this is one of the few "hits" or one of the many "misses" from the self-described FE maestro.

The test was done on another motor

December 7 2008, 5:34 AM

BB the test was done on another motor family. The True dual roller timing set beat the gear drive by 2hp. The Gear drive beat the Belt drive by 4 HP The advantage of the belt drive was the quick adjustment of the camshaft to advance or retard it. The Belt removed alot of the harmonics of the motor running. I will let you know how my DannyBee setup works out this summer. Another down side of the belt is keeping it from getting hit with road debrey. It needs a shield. 1/4 mile racing is optionial. Rick L.

Just keeping the place clean.

Glad to have you aboard and making noise. As you know as a former lurker, new voices are under more scrutiny than established voices, since the occasional spam advertiser does show up for selfish reasons. I evaluate a situation and if probability is that it is a con, I voice my opinion, knowing I may well be wrong. In this case I am, but then I sorta LIKE being wrong, as it is such a refreshing change.

Thanks for the intro as it does clarify the intentions were good. Let 'em bounce.

Careful not to disturb the "angry hornets" as I heard them described LOL
Personally, I'd be a little more worried about someone who DIDN'T like your avatar- and at that point, the old "don't look if you don't like it" would apply
