427 FE in 1965 Comet Question

Anybody out these every put a 427 in a 1965 Comet or Falcon body? I have installed a Crites engine bay kit to open up the engine bay but I would like to visit with someone that has run a four speed with this setup. Can you go with a standard clutch fork and equalizer bar setup or do you have to go with a hydraulic throw-out bearing setup because of clearance problems?

Maybe I'm forced to use an automatic which takes all the fun out of running through the gears!

Thanks,
Buddy

not a newfangled 65 but...

I'm doing a 64 and can't drive automatics very well so i'm stuck with a stick. I think hydraulics are the work of the devil so i'll use a mechanical linkage.
The smallblock crosshaft could be used if the pressure plate isn't real heavy. New ones for Mustangs could be adapted too. Similar enough car that you can make most Mustang stuff work.

A local friend is almost finished building

one. Has a Barry R 482, but unfortunately it's an auto. Going to run Nostalgia Super Stock but it is street legal.

I don't know many details, but here's a recent album.

Wow, your pal's

December 3 2008, 1:04 PM

car looks great.

One odd thing though: did he have the trans out when photographed? Have never seen such a massive rearward engine tilt (see carb, carb pad, valve covers). Maybe it's simply because of the camera angle or some radical body angle.....but the body doesn't seem it's that raked in back.

Comet

December 3 2008, 5:28 PM

I got the Comet a few months back, a friend in Cali had it built and got tired of it. So far I replaced the ring and pinion, voltage regulator (kept cooking batteries) and rerun the battery cables from the trunk to the engine. Now the headlights flicker off and on at night. Car does run nice, stocker, 10:1, C6, and power steering, RWJ

A lot have a built in breaker that gets weak with age. Fixed the problem in my Mustang many years ago.

I think it's mostly the picture

December 3 2008, 6:11 PM

since I didn't notice it so much in person. Trans would have been in then, because the shifer is in place.

The problem is that he has....

December 4 2008, 11:08 AM

a victor intake. They don't have any built in carp pad angle like stock intakes so with normal engine tilt the carb dosen't sit flat but tilts to the rear. On a side note. Dale did you decide on what engine combination you are goint to run? Scott

That makes sense Scott.. No plans for my junk

December 4 2008, 1:54 PM

at this moment. I like the 454" I was running, and could patch things up. Rather not though, so if I buy a crank I may go to a bit bigger stroke. No money and the worsening exchange rate has everything on hold indefinately. How is your project coming along??

Well I have lots of parts but I still need a few more........

December 4 2008, 2:21 PM

but I don't have much time to work on the car(maybe 1 or 2 hours a week) my little girl still needs lots of attension. Of well someday I'll git-r-done.
I have a steel 361 crank you can have if you wanted to destroke and slow down a little. Scott

Destroker

December 4 2008, 2:40 PM

If Dale wants to destroke it i've got a whole 361 that i'd be willing to trade for that 454" lump.

No repairs ever and certainly the 361 FT is a legendary performance motor. happy.gif
