The ignition wires as well as the PVC system

November 30 2008, 3:13 PM

has the wrong date code?

The oil is past due a change?

The Fuel Filter should be ahead of the mechanical pump? The scatter sheild should not be painted blue because it cannot be recertified?

The valves are mis-adjusted and the pistons have too much clearance and the owner can't distinguish the knocking sound?

(was I close?? happy.gif )

Automotive "Falsies"

November 30 2008, 3:19 PM

It`s amazing how much trouble some people will go to make their 289-302 look like a FE, isn`t it?

fe valve covers????

November 30 2008, 8:10 PM

if you guys look close those are small block valve covers not fe covers with a adapter. then the next question, where does the fe have the rights to the COBRA name???? this day and time there are lots of big inch smallblocks around that will kick most of our collective fe asses whether we like it or not. you just need to be thank full of the engine in the car. you know it could have had a small block chevy in it.....gopher

Small compensation ...

December 1 2008, 7:06 AM

His car, his build.

Still, regardless of the fact that I would do some illegal things to build, own, drive a Cobra (kit, clone or original) ... I am really not impressed with small block powered Big block body type Cobras.

I hear and understand that a "modern" big inch windsor is a force to be reckoned with, yet that isn't the end all be all of driving a Cobra is it? Cobras were never finess cars, if you wanted finess - then go buy an Italian girly man car multiple valve, FI, high whining (yes, I meant "whining"). The FE in the Cobra was just as much a statement as it was power source. It was and still is a hairy-back, low-browed, bare footed, club carrying, caveman of a car. Its 10 gallons of crap in a 5 gallon bucket. Treat it right and it just might not spill all over you.

I find very little solace in the fact that its marginally better to crack the hood and find a sbf under the hood - compared to a GM, to me they are both equally distasteful.

Kinda' like seeing a nice 60's Muscle car with all the badges, stripes, wheels and tires...only to find out is has a I-6 under the hood.

At this stage in life, I even want to see the high school pictures of Super models before taking them out on a serious date. Plastic surgeons today are just to damn good! No wonder everyone wants a DNA test when they see the kids.

They are FE covers

December 1 2008, 9:52 AM

Actually if you look close you see only two bolts on the outboard side. Smallblocks have three. FE valve covers are longer so the adapters hang past the ends of the head.

Mustang & Ford Factory 5 Build

November 30 2008, 3:18 PM

This looks like the Factory 5 car that was built in Mustangs And Ford magazine. They custom made the valve covers for a small block to look like FE type. Looks cool. It caught me off guard when I saw it in their magazine.

That big hose between the Throttle Rod and the return spring might cause a big problem some day. OOOPS!

Should have kept the hood shut

November 30 2008, 4:00 PM

If you have a Windsor dress it like a Windsor.
Why fake it?
Nothing wrong with a small block.
Lots of people have them.
I think there's a 12 step self help program too.
Step 3 involves an engine crane.....

It very well could....

December 1 2008, 5:38 AM

....the badges actually referred to the style of body, rather than the engine. The 427 Cobra was very much different from the 289 cars...roll bars, suspension, fender shapes, front end, etc. There were several engines floating around in each style, the 427 cars actually had 428's and 427's, and even an aluminum 390 nicknamed "The Turd". The 289 cars were available with 260's as well.

It could easily be up to those Holleys and they are supposed to be backwards

November 30 2008, 5:02 PM

Ford always mounted multiple Holleys backwards. Also, the motor could be anything from a 221 to a 427 smallblock (yes, there are 427 smallblocks: http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/engine/hdrp_0510_factory_five_cobra_427_windsor_small_block/index.html ) and you can run two 390's on a 221 easily. 471CI possible

November 30 2008, 7:03 PM

SBF Man-O-War block 4.200 bore X 4.25 stroke gives 471CI in 9.5 deck. Joe-JDC.

Look close

November 30 2008, 9:17 PM

It looks like the rear carb flange is welded on. It doesn't appear to be a modified new Edelbrock Air Gap dual quad for the 351W...
[linked image]

...and it also doesn't look like the dual quad that already fits Holleys that Price sells.

Great catch......

December 1 2008, 6:07 AM

if you zoom in on the pic, horizontal welding appears on the runners for #7 . Looks like someone took a single plane intake, removed the upper runner material and welded on a plate of some type. Ugh!
