Engine Stand?

Has anyone tried this engine stand or know of a better one? I want one that's easier to rotate than the 2000lb. folding Harbor Freight stand I have now. It's OK, but it gets really hard to turn as the block gets heavier, so I'm looking for something with a gear drive rotation option.

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200349940_200349940>

I have three FE's to build and I want a really good stand.

Thanks,

Kerry

there decent

November 26 2008, 1:20 AM

we had a couple of those and a couple of the big ones for the semi trucks

there good at first the ones we had grease zurks and after there sitting around with out grease they get a lil hard to turn . other then that it was nice to crank it instead of musculing the block around. there decent how much do they want for them ?
but as with anything with moving parts they do fail after time thats something to think about the other ones u could use forever with out things breaking like cranks and stuff , but i will say there nice

Stand

November 26 2008, 4:45 AM

I have one similar to that, works good after engine is mounted. Its a PITA to put a block on and being like most things made for chevy its impossible to get the engine centered so it has a netural point of balance (the block arms need to be longer), RWJ

The Harbor Freight one

that I got for 60.00 2k stand has no issues with the arms length, although getting the block on is still a bear(shit there heavy). A longer handle with a (nice)grip at each end would be a great upgrade.

They also have this one, and its cheaper to ship

November 26 2008, 6:21 AM

There was a time that they had a free shipping special. I hope it comes around again soon. I asked them by email for it after I heard about it, but it had expired and their attitude was tough luck.

For me, this one is $30 cheaper to ship. Hard to understand why. I think it is a bit better.

Sunex Stand

November 26 2008, 7:12 AM

I saw that one too, but it's only rated for 1000 lbs, where the other one is rated for 1250 lbs. It's also $70.00 more, so it may be a better stand. Any concern about the 1000 - 1250 lb. ratings? My Harbor Freight stand is good for 2000 lbs. but it's a PIA to rotate the engine.

I also checked the shipping and it's $140.00 for the cheaper stand and $60.00 for the Sunex stand????? Looks like a freight scam to me.

Kerry

I Have The Sunex Stand

November 26 2008, 8:48 AM

So far I've had a complete FE block with ED heads, no intake and no accessories on it. It sags quite a bit but thats because the upper engine support portion can fold down on the feet. I looked at the other stand rated at 1250 lb, with that one the front legs fold up like a cherry picker.

As far as storage goes the 1250lb model takes up a smaller footprint than the Sunex when folded. But then the Sunex could be stored under a bench.

As far as usage goes the Sunex has a lower weight capacity but the location of the front wheels compliments the legs of your typical folding engine crane. Where as the 1250lb model has the same wheel stance/arrangment a folding engine crane and I see that as a problem when getting an engine off the hook and on the stand.

As far as rotation goes the Sunex can stop anywhere in the 360 deg circle. Although it does not say it the previous ad for the 1250lb modle only locked in 8 positions.

So far my Sunex is working fine and it rotates smoothly and bolted up to the FE bellhousing arrangment with ease. I might do some fabrication to elininate the folding function which will cure the droop

I checked the Northern Tool web site and they do not list the Sunex at this time. I paid $299 and it was free shipping.

I'm trying to add some pics but for some reason its not working. I'm going to post this and try again. ww

Where can I find an AJAX engine stand????

November 27 2008, 10:40 AM

I did a google search, but there's nothing there about a AJAX engine stand. Lots of links to an AJAX engine, but nothing about a stand.
