My thanks to you, Wes for posting the pictures of my "Road Rocket," and yes I do drive it as often as weather permits! No trailer queen here! Again, if it weren't for your posting of the "Poor Man's 427" project, I seriously doubt that this engine would exist today! Many thanks to you for your dedication to FORD, and the F.E. engine! I hope ya'll enjoy 'em!! Dean

I think that picture of the painted block can serve as a guide to answer the weekly "I found this 427 and wonder what it's from" questions. It shows the side oiler casting cut away for the motor mount.
Acording to the guy I bought it from, he said it is similar to the casting # C3AE-9424-E. The ports started out as 2 1/8" tall by 1 1/8" wide. I port matched to 2 1/4" tall and 1 5/16 wide, same on the intake ports on the heads. I really believe that it'll take way more than the 800 cfm carb i'm using!
That's always been my dream car! What kind of distributor and cap is that?I would like to copy,I have clearance problems with my aircleaner.(62 tri-power)Gal.
Thanks for the great pics!

That, believe it or not, is the mallory distributor[cable tach drive] that was in the engine when I bought it back! That is also the original mallory marine cap! I just cleaned it up and sprayed it with the same clear w/ prism metalflake[for shows.] I also polished the dist. housing and checked it for performance, since it has no vacuum advance. It has a total advance of 38* @ about 2800 rpm. The mallory cap and rotor are readily available. The dist. model # is YL and the TYPE # is 502-B2. I found a spare dist. on ebay for $25.00, just for parts! Dual point, which is what I am currently using, however I bought a conversion kit for electronic ignition. I just like the "old school" approach to things! Dean
Note on those Marine Pentroof Valve Covers....Unique to the Marines I believe

is the Breather Capability/Internal Baffle on Pentroofs that allows filling w/oil and Breather or and /PCV System. The majority of Pentroofs have no such internal baffles and holes for same. Engines w/o get the intake manifold mounted breathers and non-access VCs.
You are correct, these each have a baffle inside, and one has the p.c.v. grommet and the other has an opening for a twist in oil breather cap. I prefer the "cleaner look" of no openings. My engine breathes through the oil fill cap/tube and a p.c.v. that screws into the rear base of the carb mount with a hose leading to the rear of the manifold where the road draft tube would attach. Clean-and it works well! Dean
Basically, I did a similar engine build as the "Poor Man's 427" project as Wes did! This engine got pulled from a boat about 15 years ago, because of a blown head gasket, which unknown to me, had caused a hydrostatic lock in #5 cylinder, and severely bent the rod!. It was bought very cheap, and sold to a friend who wanted to do a Cobra project. He never got around to it, so last year I bought it back for what I sold it for, 15 years ago!
I wound up sleeving all 8 cyls, and of course had it decked, squared, magged, the usual steps done when taking on a project this size. It's got std. bore 11.6:1 comp. pistons, plasma rings, std. rods and mains. The only parts that were "trick," were the heads [c7ae-a], 428 w/o A.I.R. that I spent personally 50 hours doing the porting and polishing on while the engine was in "repair." I port matched the intake gasket to the intake ports and the intake as well. They weren't flowed, but I tried to make them as close to the same as possible for a "novice." The intake has no Part #'s or production date, but has the FOMOCO logo on the driver"s side. It is aluminum, and was cleaned, and sprayed with a high temp "Chrome Metalflake" show paint[couldn't find a polished or chromed intake,] and then high temp clearcoated, for the shows! It's got an 800 d.p. carburetor, and a Holman-Moody "LeMans Grind" cam and lifters, and lots of chrome or polished aluminum accessories.
I also changed out to a centerforce clutch/pressure plate set-up, [hydraulic] and a freshly rebuilt big in/big output top loader transmission, complete with the correct shifter box and handle. This is a WHOLE LOT BETTER than the small 351-c and T-5 that was in it originally! You can believe that!

Thanks for asking! It is a factory built "roller" or "turn-key minus" built by SHELL VALLEY! They are an excellent company to work with- they helped answer several critical questions during the transformation from a 351-clev to a 427! They also supplied some of the parts, ceramic headers, motor mount plates, and lots of information! The car was delivered without paint, body was removed, and placed on a rotisserie, and 2 bodymen spent 100 hours finishing off the backside of the fiberglass so it looks as good as the top side does! It was basecoated and after the stripes were painted on, it got several coats of clear! Dean
