"The Year of the Cammer" Bill Coon / Heads & Intakes

The information in the post about a single 4 BBL intake from Bill Coon is wrong.

From Bill:

Bill is planning to cast two intakes;

The first intake will be a dual plane dual 4 BBL, just like the factory orriginal.

The second intake will be a single plane, air gap type manifold, with tapered short runners, and an open plenum for two 4 BBLs. It will have a removable plate top for either two 4500 style holleys or a removable top for twin dominators.

Bill is planning for either of these options to be available. If the customer wanted a single 4 BBL, they could machine their own top to bolt on top of the open plenum.

Bill is shooting for a price tag arroud $650 per intake.

Heads:

Bill is quallifying the last few sets of heads now, then they will be sent out for final machine work. Bill is hoping the first sets of heads will be ready to ship to customers in a few weeks. Bill is running 42 sets, or 84 heads in this run. Heads will be made available to customers in the order that their deposits were recieved.

Since Bill took deposits, all his heads are spoken for. If Randy is interested in a set, Bill could keep his information if Randy contacts Bill, and the guy could pick up a set if anyone backs out, or Bill has a few vendors who have bought several sets, and perhaps arrangements could be made to buy one of their sets from them.

Bills first 11 sets were delivered to Jay Brown, Earl Wade (Nicolsins mechanic), Robert Pond, & John Turner from Florida. Anyone wanting information on the Quality of Bills heads should contact one of these guys and ask questions.

Roger

a few corrections

November 23 2008, 12:28 PM

just to correct a few things that roger got wrong
1/price is 7000 pair with alloy caps and 7500 with steel caps-this is with all parts ready to assemble
2/weight i was charged for at the heat treaters was 55 lb per head-they get lighter as they go through the machining process .absolute minimum deck thickness is 5/8 with combustion chamber thickness 7/8.more metal=more strength=more weight
3/the intake is 1450 which includes air postage and insurance to the buyer anywhere in the u.s. or canada.it is a reasonably heavy item as cast but the runners have 1/8 inch in radius left in them for port matching if required.this was left to prevent reversion.
4/i am the first to admit that due to haste i relied on other peoples word instead of doing all checking myself but this problem -line boring-has now been rectified.
i would like to think that the prices could be cheaper but unfortunately the foundry workers and machine shop guys have a real bad problem over here=they have to eat
good luck to bill if he can make enough intakes to get the price to 650 .high production levels equals low cost.if anybody wants pictures they can contact me at paul.munro1@bigpond.com

Thanks for the update.

It is good to learn the latest on your Australian Cammer effort. I know this is being approached with the same personal passion for the Cammer as the Coon effort (I've got few details of the Gilbert effort). Debug of any new engineering project takes time and money, and I look forward to learning more on where yours currently stands. I know you'll be offering even more well constructed parts for us as the months and years move forward.

Associated Munro Cammer photos.

November 23 2008, 6:47 PM

Since the thread opener discusses all Cammer efforts and is not focused on one, I will follow up with Munro info from the Australian effort which responds to the opening post.

The cam caps are machined from billet 4140 high alloy steel, making them rather pricy. Just as the Coon effort upgraded the caps from gray iron to ductile iron due to known breakage issues, the Munro effort has upgraded to the spendier high alloy steel. The Munro steel caps have been tested and updated to perform reliably in this application.

Information and photo source is Paul Munro. As forum admin I currently give the various Cammer development efforts equal priority in the tech forum. These Cammer product posts must foremost contain technical or new product information, while downplaying the "sale" side of the equation. I don't promote one brand over the other, but instead provide info as it becomes available, and I do editorialize.

Cammer heads

November 23 2008, 11:08 PM

I have 5 sets of Bill's heads coming if anyine needs any. I ordered them bare and will be getting other parts for them as we do them for customers. we plan on building some of these engines in the near future when we have heads to see what we can do for a price on a Cammer crate engine program.
I should have the first ten sets of T&D rockers in anytime. Everything was done and waiting on some parts to come back from heat treat to finish assembling them.

Thanks, Keith Craft
