What would you guys do to a cougar 390 auto to make it a real nice performing street car?
Nothing to radical.Gas mileage not a big concern.

390 ...

Not sure how much you want to spend? This combo would probably go about 6-8k depending on the components you choose and how much of the work you do yourself. I would go with a 4.25" stroker kit(this should net you around 445ci depending on overbore) from Barry R or one of the other suppliers on the forum. Then a good set of heads, Ed's are good for the money, a little bowl work and port match. Roller rockers and end stands. 280ish cam. Ed r.p.m intake and 800cfm carb.1-7/8 or 2" headers and 3" exh. system with an X-pipe. 2200 stall converter and a 3:50 rear gear and you would have you a quick, reliable cat. Mike

I just want a medium range performance steet car. Not an every day driver just something I could depend on getting me where I want to go with some excitement. It has 3:70 gears with posi. Probably going with stock heads(ported).

The 390 with the S-code intake and deeper gears with the stock

CJ Cam 0.490/ 270 lift cam just needs good headers , decent exhaust

and fine tune ignition with hotter spark and your good to go with many trouble free miles to enjoy.

My 2 cents worth

Speaking of stock ported heads, try stepping up to CJ valves while you're at it.

CJ manifolds will breath much better than your stock iron logs.

Heck, even the stock CJ intake manifold is good and it's affordable. I even hear good things about the stock CJ 735cfm 4V carb.

Factory Cobra Jet parts will be more reliable and not cause a Collector Car insurance problem by being "modified", but that's just my opinion.
