OT..R.I.P.---DHL

Looks like my favorite shipper is going under. NO more DHL in the states. I just called the place I drop off at and was told that they would not accept packages after Friday. I am not sure but I think they will still pick up (for a fee of course) through the end of January. I need to find out. I have been using them for about five years now and find their prices unbeatable for larger parts. They also gave me a discount even though I only ship about 8-10 items per month. UPS is going to clean up on this. Tbolt

R.I.P DHL

November 17 2008, 10:04 AM

They're also going to lay-off or cause lay-offs of 8-10 thousand people in and around Wilmington,Ohio my home town. The total workforce here is about 12,000 so we're really screwed.Lots of people looking for a building to jump off of.None tall enough though, probably just break an arm or leg.

I know the company my stepdaughter works for used the exclusively until a few months ago. Package loss rate or theft became impossible to accept. I never had a problem with them delivering to the house but they didn't have any local facliities for shipping out around here..

DHL Hired the bravest Pilots

November 17 2008, 1:40 PM

When I was in Afghanistan DHL used to land at Bagram Airbase. They flew with their signature Yellow Planes and delivered mail and other items to us.

They were they only non green or grey airplanes flying hence the Bravest Pilots. You dont want to be the plane that stands out when the bad guys start getting frisky.

DHL and a Royal Screw Job

November 17 2008, 2:28 PM

I talked a few weeks ago with my DHL Man. He'd moved his familly to Jax and bought a new Ford Diesel Van about a year ago specifically for DHL. He had the Van Painted DHL Yellow, bought DHL Decals/installed and bought DHL Clothing and went to work at something like $0.75 for each package he picked up/delivered. He told me they mentioned a 25% workforce reduction a few weeks ago----------he thought he was safe.
You know the rest NO-DHL

DHL isnt going anywhere....

November 17 2008, 6:51 PM

There just eliminating their domestic service inside the USA. You have to realize DHL is the UPS of the world. They are going back to their roots. When i worked there in the early 80's it was a gigantic world network but didnt offer USA to USA services.

Unless you had the need to ship or recieve international parcels you probably would have not even heard of DHL. They then got into the domestic market and did well since they had the system and drivers in place for the international pick ups and deliveries. They set up a domestic hub system rather than using commercial air lines which they had been using up to this point. The company grew rapidly. I opened and ran DHL SJC (San Jose Ca.).

Good benifits too....Free Flights For one employee of mine, I arranged the connections for him to fly to Cairo and back to San Francisco. All commercial airlines. All he did was carry the excess baggage claim checks and give them to the DHL empoyees picking up the shipments. The company kept apartments all over the world, and one might spend a night in one and take the next leg of a journey the next day.

My highlight wsa flying in the FAA seat in the cockpit on a 727 cargo plane. Coming back from Ohio we recieved the clearance to desend out of 37 thousand to somthing 6 thousand. The Pilot looked at the Co-pilot smiled, and pushed the nose over and pointed that plane almost straight down. The altimiter was really spinning... then the pull up to level off UGH... The Pilot then said " just like the book says A maximum performance desent in a Boing 727. After landing they erased the black box tape LOL

I don't want to see anyone lose their Job, but DHL ....

November 17 2008, 7:51 PM

Screwed me over big time.

I used to use them regularly for my obsolete computer, and computer parts business.

One time my best customer in Tokyo sends me an email, and asks me if I would do him a favor. Of course I said. My client wanted to buy a Las Vegas style Poker table. I call DHL, and give them the dimensions, and the weight of the box, and asked how much to ship to Tokyo? The rep tells me that she can't give me an exact quote until the item is processed. But based on what I am telling her it should be around $250. OK, I say come get it. The driver picks it up, and I forget about it.

First, for some unknown reason, it lands at Narita, but for some reason it gets sent to Hong Kong. WTF? I ask. Sorry, we made a mistake. It's already on a plane heading back to Narita. It gets delivered, and my client is happy, great. I wait for a bill. I call. My bill won't be generated for another 30 days. I ask if they know what the charges are so I can bill the end user. Not yet, call back next week. I call, and am told $875.00. Hold on, I was quoted roughly $250. "But sir, this is an over size box, and therefore, we have to charge what we are charging you." I ask to speak to the head of customer service. Same story, except she tells me that first, the rep I first spoke with had no business saying what she did. Furthermore, because I had filed a complaint several months earlier, DHL would not even consider, much less lower the charges on this invoice.

On that occasion, I told a supplier to send some computers to me via ground. Also, because I was in no hurry, send them then slowest, and chaeapest way possible. Well, the DHL driver who picked up the boxes sent them overnight express. That time they agreed to charge the appropriate charges.

Anyway, I tell the head of customer service, I refuse to pay this I tell them. I get letters, and more letters. Finally, I get a call from a collection agency. They will cut the charges in half. Well, it's not what I wanted, but I can see it isn't going to get any better. I pay half of the $875, or about $425.00.

Aside from the fact that I don't want to see anyone lose his, or her job , DHL can go down in flames for all I care.

I think that of the problem is that DHL is owned by the German Telephone Company. I lived in Germany when I was a kid, and Germany's version of MA Bell was always gouging people, and almost 40 years later I hear it isn't much better.

I hope they survive to save Jobs, but aside from that.they can die for all I care.
