1st thought would be a truck with such a high VIN

I would say a 1970 truck of sorts. Is it an FE block? whats the casting number etc It most likely can be determined with more info

It would help if you would answer questions! With a little more information its possible to tell you exactly everything about the car it came in too.

Now that its a 553 VIN yes 1970 Mercury but you did not answer question on what engine it is. 385 or a FE or?

I have a 70 Mercury with a vin very close to yours

The same VIN should be stamped on the top of the transmission

Just forward of where the tailshaft mates with the trans case. Sounds like you have the 428-4V engine and trans from a full size Mercury passenger car.

0z663371, would still have been a Mercury

November 17 2008, 6:49 AM

Ford numbers are 100000-399999, Mercury are 500000 to 799999 trucks start at 10001 and go to 99999 (5 digits). Some years Lincons and Shelby's have their own numbering too. Hawkrod

I would say Cobra Jet Cougar if its a 1970 because in 70 the cyclones etc would have 429's. If the trans is original mate to engine the only ones that came with the cast iron short shaft would be the Cougar cj's.

not sure what the Z in partial vin is.

Definitely not a Cougar

November 17 2008, 8:59 AM

If it was a Cougar it would have had an F or an R instead of a Z. Hawkrod

Ask Kevin Marti.....

He assisted me with a partial vin off a block once. If anyone can tell you what model of Mercury it came from, it would be him.

Re: Definitely not a Cougar

I know the z throws a curve but could be a mis-stamp or mis-read of letter. What other Mercury in 1970 would have a FE engine ? All intermediates and full size would have a 429 or 460? About the only FE I can think of in a 70 Mercury would be a 428CJ. Mercury did not use a Z assembly plant in 70 as far as I know.

Maybe its a long lost 70 Cyclone with a Boss 9 and the engine is really a 385 series.

Ok, Jerry what is it we know you know.... LOL and the VIN on trans is?

Wow, I guess I was not clear enough when I first responded.

November 17 2008, 5:29 PM

As I noted quite a few posts ago, the engine is from a 1970 Mercury as Royce also confirmed. It is not a Cougar or anything else, just a Mercury full size car built in St. Loius in 1970. It is neither unusual nor odd and a reasonable amount of them were built. Also, it did not matter what kind of motor it was or if the number was 0Z663371 or 0Z563371, the answer would still have been exactly the same except it could have also been an intermediate had it not been an FE. The fact that this is an FE forum and he did not mention it was O/T or make mention of other engines it was reasonable to assume it was FE related. Hawkrod

That is interesting, I also have a 428 FE block with a similar number. It is also "C" scratched in the back as well.
