Just an ol' Tempest drag race car on ebay......

Here's a killer thread. This '63 Tempest got put on eBay. It was abandoned at a storage facility. The yard owner couldn't get enough for scrap so they put it on the 'bay. Allegedly had a $4000 Buy It Now until the first bid. A few Pontiac guys gawked at it, then one of them decided to run it through the list of '63 Tempest SD421 race car VINs.....BINGO! What did it go for? Whatever you're thinking, add a zero or two.......then double it to factor in resto costs. The "find of 2008" it would seem.

Cool!

What's more amazing is that a.) the exterior doesn't give any hint (faded decals, race car lettering, etc.) as to what the car really was and b.) lacking an engine, rusty and in need of some heavy repairs, amazing someone didn't junk it or merely do a cosmetic restoration, dump in a SBC and drive it until it did finally hit the crusher.

See the CC article below. Some cool cars here too. The ZL-1 Camaros were likely among the rarest of all GM's built. Saw these cars when new (Dick Harrell's) but nobody really bought one as the price was IIRC over $10,000. The factory racers got almost all of these cars but a few were sold to Joe Six Packs.....wish I was one!

Here's a direct link to the auction. It had over 43,000 hits while it was running. Truely a historic race car. I'm pretty sure it went to a collector in California. They are still out there boys and they are just waiting to be discovered...

This car has great signifigance...

since its an original SD Pontiac. These are the same cars that ran against the 63 Lightweight's so it is part of FE history even though its not a FE. It would be the same if it was one of Grumpy's cars or Beswick's cars. That's why a post like this shouldn't be deleted.

Agree and will add....

(bound to get me in trouble here!) that at least it is a CAR, not politics, religion, guns, boats, or one of BB's sometimes indecipherable posts! But, I also think it's significant to think that here in 2008, how many more Ford barn finds of cars now 30-40-50 years old are out there. One would think that almost all the truly rare cars have been found but the story suggests otherwise.
