Jack. I used to love that car and Don spent more than a few $$ at Jacks shop. Don used to fly himself to some races in his own Helicopter. Thanks for the pic..
I wonder if Jack does the same job on Don's current Mustang? Holding the sides of the car seems to have disappeared.
Maybe we need to start a new Nostalgia racing series where cars are required to do dry hops and test launches and guys hold the quarter panels and squirt VHT under the slicks?
OK, now guess the track. That red building in the background might still be there. If it is the track I'm thinking, its a lot closer to Don Bowles than Jack Roush.
In 1979, I went to the NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle Washington, and Don Bowles had a brand new Gapp&Roush built 79 Fairmont racing in A/SM. Not only did he win Modified Production, he also won either best engineered or best appearing car at the same race. I`ve had a lot of people ask me if my decision to build a Fairmont a few years later was based on Bob Gliddens killer Pro Stock Fairmonts, but no, it was Bowles car that "set the hook" for me. Bowles car, like mine, was a back half car, much more stock looking that a P/S car, even back then. By the way, Glidden was running in Pro Stock at this same race, but unfortunately, it was in his 1 year only Plymouth Arrow!
428 powered Fairmont drag car, Best ET:10.03@132.11MPH, best 60 ft: 1.29
59 Meteor 2 dr. sedan 332, Ford O Matic
74 F350 ramp truck 390 4speed
car would be running a Cleveland at the time. I was always amazed by Don Bowles rides as being very clean but also the fastest Fords around. And that distinction wasn't limited to the Mustang in the pic. All his rides were top notch. I do wonder what happened to his '79 A/SM Fairmont? Maybe it'll turn up someday like the rare '63 Pontiac noted in a post above, locked in a barn!
Jack and Don are still very tight. Don runs the NMRA now with Roush power. Jack has also been known to show up at the NMRA races with Don.
For some reason I think I read Jack has Don's A/SM Fairmount. I could be wrong. Jack has a bunch of cars from the past in Michigan. Rumor is he has the Tijuana Taxi being restored.
might be here at the NC or MI museum. Too bad they don't list which vehicles are in Jack's collection. Would be cool if they did a Jay Leno Garage type of history of each vehicle with text from the man himself!
they won't have to look far for don's fairmont because he still owns it.....i talked to him at the atlanta NMCA race about 6 weeks ago. thats what he told me then. he was racing a late model mustang with one of the refurbished 358 inch nascar engines. he only ran a 8.84..ha ha. don's not a spring chicken but he ain' forgot how its done and this car is a stick shift..also his transport semi had roush racing development team lettered on the sides, they also had his son's car as well as jacks daughter and her husbands cars also........also don is as nice a guy that there is......gopher

Could you ask your friend Bud if he'd mind me posting that picture on my 351C WIKI
I have started a page for "Cool 351C powered Carz" And that picture is a keeper for the ages.
thanks
blizz
I'm sure Bud wouldn't mind, just give him credit for the pic and send a link so he can see it, he would get a kick out of it. He is good friends with Don Boles, introduced me to him in Columbus, RWJ
You know I don,t remember that car running SS/K .. Must have a low HP 351 because it ran SS/G SS/H ..With the holley carb.& 330HP motor The license Plate said WHAT EVER IT TAKES ... VERY FAST CAR .. Red Le Blanc
That is Jack helping out long time friend Don Bowles of Madisonville, KY. The track is Windy Hollow Raceway, located South of Owensboro, KY. Don's Mustang was very competitive in NHRA S/S. If it wasn't at Don's shop being "tweaked", the car or the engines were at Jack's! These two have a relationship that is near unbelievable. After Don sold the Mustang to Harold Stout, he begin campaigning his famous Ford Fairmont in NHRA Competition Eliminator. With Jack's support and Don's talent the Fairmont was just as successful. Jack and Don continue their efforts in a modern fashion, hence the Roush/Bowles versions of the "Coal Digger" cars that compete in NMCA and similar events.
Don is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.
Red, although the fender decals may have been changed, I believe the car was an original Boss 351 or used that variety of the 351 engine. The hood has the Boss paint, although about any area could have been changed, I really believe it's an original Boss, if my memory serves me correctly.
Dave.
