You must accept PayPal ,PayPro, or credit cards now

November 13 2008, 9:11 AM

You can't choose any form of payment anymore. If you even say that you accept cash, check or MO in your auction they will end it unless it is a pickup only item, car, or real estate. Hawkrod

Yep, I was already warned about the accepting cash or money orders in the main text. I pretty will quit selling there. They sent me notice my power seller status is in jeopardy. I sent them a blistering response telling them what they can do with their power seller program. Am currently awaiting a suspension or total ban happy.gif

It's weird, they almost seem to be purposely pi$$ing off their best customers. A buddy of mine just shut down his e-bay business and he had over 50,000 transactions. The fees were hurting him badly but the nail-in-the-coffin was the paypal only thing. That alone put his low margin, high volume business in the red.
Don't despair though he's opening a mini-golf course where his store used to be! happy.gif

ebay blows

November 13 2008, 11:11 AM

i calculated about 25% goes to fees.

1 insertion fee
2 final value fee
3 paypal fee

ouch my a$$ is hurting. ive been out of work for 2 months so now i hustle on ebay and craigs list. the aircraft mechanic jobs are a little slim this time of year. my worst fear is working for a automotive shop, thats not for me. id rather be a plumbers helper with sewer lines than work at a crooked auto shop.

I used to always think paypal was the way to go..

November 13 2008, 11:03 AM

I could pay for my item quickly or receive payment quickly, everyone was happy. Now, the last item I sold I find out that paypal will hold the funds, for up to 21 days, until the buyer decides to leave feedback or not dispute?? So now he has the $650 item I sold, and paypal has MY $650 until he says it's ok??
The buyer had good feedback and I decided that I would ship the item, but only under the condition that he called me first so I could have a personal contact phone number that I could dial if something went wrong. Luckily I didnt need it!

Epay

November 13 2008, 11:16 AM

Well I guess that ends me selling on Epay, I don't like the idea someone can take money out of my account. I had 5 items to list. No wonder they are going in the tank, RWJ

***A Message from Dinesh Lathi: Paperless Payments and Seller Standards***

October 21, 2008 | 11:01AM PST/PT

Dinesh Lathi

Hello everyone...I'm back again with some important updates and reminders.
Paperless Payments Required
eBay's new Paperless Payments policy will roll-out this week. That means sellers will no longer be able to list an item without one of the approved electronic payment methods: PayPal, credit or debit card payment to a seller's merchant account, or ProPay. You can also offer Pay on Pickup in addition to these payment methods. If you dont already, you should add at least one of the approved electronic payment methods to your listings immediately so they aren't blocked when you relist. Once the new policy rolls-out, prohibited payment methods will no longer be displayed in the Payment Details section of the item page.

Listing with ProPay
When the new Paperless Payments policy rolls-out, youll be able to sign-up for a ProPay account and link it to your eBay account, so you can begin offering this payment option to your buyers. For more information, go to www.ProPay.com.

More time to update listing descriptions
You also need to remove references to checks and money orders from your item descriptions. We know that this is a busy time of year for sellers so well wait until January 15, 2009, before we begin insisting on the removal of prohibited payment methods from item descriptions.

Listing fee credits for restricted listings
We will credit insertion and feature fees to sellers who are forced to cancel and relist "restricted" Good 'Til Canceled listings in order to remove references to checks and money orders from the item descriptions. We will credit insertion and feature fees for all multiple-item Good 'Til Canceled listings that meet the following criteria as of October 20, 2008:
-- Listed on eBay.com in categories covered by the Paperless Payments policy
-- Have at least one sold item
-- Offer check or money order as a payment option.

Get more details and see Frequently Asked Questions on Paperless Payments.

Re: I used to always think paypal was the way to go..

November 13 2008, 12:25 PM

In the past, at least for me, Paypal was a evil necessity. Now it's just evil. I still take it but I'm ready to go to a bank and see if I can get a MC and Visa account. If I'm going to have to pay anyway it might as well be directly to the cc company.

EBay is not really cost effective any more

November 13 2008, 1:12 PM

I used to sell stuff on eBay but haven't any more. Craigslist and local classifieds seems to be a better cheaper way. eBay rates are like BarrettJackson now and if i wanted to pay $100 to sell a $1000 item i've got better options.
I've alway found it to be such a nuisance dealing with idiots. They says there's one born every minute and during the course of a week long auction that can mean a lot of stupid emails. Even if i'd put a flat shipping cost...which i've usually underestimated and had to pay part of... i'd get an endless stream of "How much is shipping to ..." by people that never do bid.

The auction format sucks for me, in stuff i'm willing to buy i've usually got sniped by a dollar or less and stuff i'm trying to sell sits with no bids 'till the final seconds. You can sometimes get more money that the item is worth but you can also pay good money relisting an item several times and lowering your bottom price and not sell it.

For instance how much did it cost that guy with the purple XR7 convertible listed at $29,900 with no bids? Could he have put a full page ad in the Auto Trader for that?

Lets do some math...

November 13 2008, 1:41 PM

An item I recently sold on eBay went for $400. Adding up the insertion fees and extra picture charge equalled .60 then the final value fee of $15.31. Add the Paypal fee of $12.91 to it and you have a total of $28.82. If they held onto my money for the full 60 days they would make about $4.25 interest and I would lose $4.25 since its not accruing interest in my account. This would be a grand total for eBay and out of my pocket of $33.07 which is about 8.5% of the total selling price.
Look I don't mind them making money, thats what its all about but, when almost 9% of my total sale goes to them thats ridiculous. Let multiply that over all the auctions on eBay and your talking about huge money. I guess were all screwed until there is another online auction site to compete with eBay.
This is the only time I have every wished the Gov't would step in and declare a company a monopoly and start to regulate them because they are running wild.

I was very hesitant to ship the item!

November 13 2008, 7:58 PM

I have been on ebay since 2000, and like here, I lurk a lot more than participate... I JUST finally reached the big 100 on my feedback score and I have maintained 100% positive.
I am verified on paypal and would always prefer as a buyer to use it just for the ease and convience. I was surprised when after the buyer payed almost immediately at the end of auction that I had an email from paypal that the moneys were in my account but would be/could be held for up to 21 days... It also said that the moneys could be freed quicker if the buyer left positive feedback.
I just had a hard time thinking that this guy would have the tool I sent, paypal would have my $$$ and THEY would be the judge and jury of when or IF I get my payment if this buyer decided to go scammer on me!

The Fine Print on eBay/PayPal where you have to have a Certified Delivery Signature has

November 13 2008, 3:08 PM

confused me. Very simply if the Sales dollars are beyond X-Amount they require a Certified Signature not just a Delivery Confirmation, a Std UPS Sign Here or in worse case a drop it off at door. They require the person who is listed on the transaction to show ID. If someone else at the location signs for it the sellers Shit-Out-Of-Luck if it is not a certified signature and there's a problem.
