Comp XE268H or XE274H in 69 Mustang Fastback

Hi - I've been reading tons of posts on Comp cams XE268H and XE274H cam but I still can't decide which one to go with in my car. Car is a 69 Mustang fastback, 390, .030 over, 4-speed, 3.50 gears, Edlebrock Performer heads, Edelbrock intake (not Performer), Holley 700 double, Hooker headers and and MSD distributor.

I drive the car about 10 times a year, still want to have decent vacuum at idle and don't want to nurse the throttle when at the lights. Car generally doesn't see anything over 5300rpm. I want a fairly good lope at idle. If I go with 274 will I need adjustable rockers and stands or can I still stay with the stock setup? Can I use the stock setup at 268?

Thanks for all your help.

I like either the 268H or 270H better than either of the ones you mentioned

I've run the two grinds you mention in a 428. I was unimpressed with either of them. Either the 268H or 270H will make the car more fun to drive.

Any of them can be run with the stock rockers if, and only if, your machinist keeps the valve stem heights very near to stock height. Non adjustable rockers depend on all things being in their stock position when the valve is closed. If the valves are too long, too short, or the valve seats are too high, or cut too low, or the heads have been milled a lot, or the block has been milled a lot, then something has to change to compensate for what has happened over the past 40+ years.

Often it is easier to install adjustable rockers.

270H's no vacume issues. You could get lucky on the pushrods, but Royce is right adjustables may well save you alot of grief. Mike

You stated;

Can you expand on this? I've been looking hard at the xe 274 for a cam to match

a set of aluminum 427mr heads that peak flow at .525-.530 lift. This will probably

be a 428 scj type build for either a 69 mustang or Cobra kit car.(I know cart

before the horse) I'm not worried about the idle sound,(big blocks got it, period)

more about street ability. Thanks, Aaron

Those two XE series cams have a taxi cab - like idle. The car ran better with the 268H, and better still with the 270H. No problem with all power accesories including vacuum powered hide away headlights and power brakes.

If this is for a Cobra kit car that has manual brakes and no vacuum accesories then why not step up to something more substantial? All these cams are really mild. With a manual trans and a 428 something like a Comp 294S is a real blast to drive.

Agree with Royce

I really liked the 268H. It was a real wake up call from the stock cam.

What cam, intake, and compression ratio do you have now?

November 11 2008, 6:23 AM

That might help in the choice, all 4 cams have similar specs.
What about a 108 LSA cam for more lope if that is the goal?
Or, if you go to adj rockers the Ford c4ae-b cam at 106 LSA will really give it some lope but at only .500 lift so no fancy rocker setup needed.

Re: What cam, intake, and compression ratio do you have now?

Werby - compresion ratio is 10:1 and am currently running an old Crane Fireball camshaft. I believe it is .500 lift and .290 duration.

Can you tell me more about the Ford camshaft?

Thanks.
