What is the thinnest head gasket available for the FE? Is the original Ford thin metal head gasket still available and if so where can it be purchased.

There are thin copper gaskets but they reuire O - ringing the block and heads.

They are all over Ebay, or click on the links button above and call any of the parts suppliers, or call Summit or Jegs.

I like the Felpro 1020 with aluminum heads

The steel gaskets are going to gall the aluminum heads.

The Ford Racing Performance Parts A427 gasket is the same as Felpro #1020 and costs about half as much. Available from all the same places.

A427 gaskets....

November 8 2008, 4:25 PM

are the way to go, that is all I have used. They are made by Fel-Pro and in fact stamped Fel-Pro 1020 right on them. Compressed they are around .041 and are sold in sets instead of the 1020 single pack at about the same price as the pair of A427. It's a no brainer!

Cometics are better for all out race engines with high compression and about 6 times the cost but are re-usable. You can get those in many thicknesses to help with quench distance or valve interferance relief, lot's of thickness choices between .030 and .060. Normally you want about .035-.045 quench distance, if you are looking for compression mill the decks of the heads, on the Edelbroxk CJ head if you cut .050 you will gain a full point of compression. You need to mill the intake flange of the head the same amount, 1 to 1.

Just be sure to install them correctly front to back, there is no up and down even though the fire ring in the gasket is different top and bottom. You want to block the "banana" passage opening on the block in the front. They are marked front and are identifiable on an assembled engine by showing gasket across the block at the witness cut-out on the top corner of the head.
