I am taking the 'stang back to the engine shop as soon as the weather clears for work to sort out the valve train noise (crane aluminum roller rockers)
I am considering if there is major work on his part, to swap cams.
What is the biggest lift with the stock (shipped with heads) springs that is recommended?
Hi Doug sorry your having problems. I talked cam selection for my 445ci stroker quite a bit with Barry at Survival. He knew I was using Ed 428CJ heads fresh out of the box on a street machine with some track time and I was not planning on winding the crap out of it. We decided to go with the Comp 294S but you need a higher gear and a higher stall if it's a C-6. Good luck! ww
They are around 115# closed / 320# open brand new. They are good for about .600" lift as far as coil bind, but the low spring pressure really is the limiting factor in my opinion. They were fine with a Comp 280H (230 degrees @ .050" duration / .560" lift)in my car for about 25,000 miles, often shifting at 6000 RPM. I would not try anything wilder than that (relatively mild) cam.
Bottom line you should compare the specs for Edelbrock's springs to the specs for the cam you want to use. Then buy the right springs if necessary.

Doug, I'm using same cam as Warren, I talk with Barry and choose that cam for street and few track passes, I also had him install comps recomended dual springs to match the cam. Eds only handle 600" lift and the 294s is 605".

Crane cam with the (then) out of the box Edelbrock heads to 6800 rpm no problem. I never experienced valve float or any problems, ran it for about 4 years before going to a solid roller and changing the spring package (among other things...).
I would think this cam would be on the ratty side for most people on the street but I ran it.

Remember that with a solid cam you get to subtract lash from the gross lift. So a .605 lift cam will have maybe .590 actual. The Edelbrock springs are singles with a damper. They're OK, but nowhere near as good as a good double spring package at controlling things.
Doug Go as big as you want but remember that you need to leave .080" for coil bind on the valve springs. I like .100" myselk for safety. Make sure the pushrod and rocker do not rub against each other. I run a 587-607" with a hydro roller camshaft and have room to spare with an Erson rocker set. I am running beehive springs. Ersons are heavier than the stock FE rockers. I have lost 300 rpms with a valve float at 5,800 rpms instead of 6,200rpms. The power drops off. This is with Shelby heads, not Edelbrock. Just remember the bigger the cam the shorter the life of the valve spring. Rick L.
