I think it is made in China. Not made by either Edelbrock or Dove.

China???? What is the reason you go with this one...
November 7 2008, 4:43 AM
...is it for saving reasons only? By the way, are the Dove pumps still around and were they able to raise the quality of them? If so who sells them, or does Dove sell them only directly? Donīt like the idea to have some china parts under my hood....(:
I've got a Dove FE water pump on my red car. It is a piece of poo. The casting has pock marks in it where the mold did not fill properly, plus it was machined off center so the bolt holes for attaching the water pump are nearly broke through the side of the casting. The rear cover plate had a big void in it so when I filled the motor with water the first time it started pissing everywhere because the gasket would not seal against the void. I was able to fix it by filling the void with Devcon aluminum structural adhesive. I had to slot the holes on my alternator bracket to match up with the mislocated holes on the Dove pump.
Nearly everything Scott Drake sells is made in China. It is very high quality stuff. I don't expect a problem Drake is the one controlling quality of the products, he does not accept nor sell inferior products.
If only Dove would take responsibility for the quality of their parts they could own the market for FE castings.

Royce that is incredible, I bought my Dove pump back in 1991, installed it in '93
November 7 2008, 6:55 AM
and still have it on the car.
It is really a shame that the quality dropped off that much.
From your description what you paid for was essentially a chunk of scrap aluminum.
How the heck could J. Dove allow that to happen????"
My pump was 100% spot on in all respects, both fit and finish, and the bonus was
the Ford oval and casting numbers. The $225 price tag was steep.
I guess I either lucked out big time or they had the right person supervising the foundry back then.
I looked at the Dove pumps this year at Columbus swap meet
November 7 2008, 7:20 AM
There were 3 or 4 on the table there at Doves booth. All of them had the machining offset like mine. Some sort of setup error by the guy doing the machine work. Steve V bought 4 of them from Dove this year, two were unusable.

Speaking with some Auto Parts and other types of suppliers I know they all say when dealing with Chinese Mfgs you pay up front and are stuck with what you get. Drake may have a developed a relationship or have a representitive there or perhaps he's prepared to eat crappy product rather then sell it.
Compared to the Edelbrock?
I like the looks of it. I've never cared for branding on my parts like Edelbrock and most everyone else does.
You are correct Royce, the Chinese will build to any quality that the customer likes. You want crap they'll build you crap, you want good stuff they'll build you good stuff.
Casting an aluminum water pump is not rocket science but then again the Chinese just put a man in space.
53 F100, Volare clip, 4 wheel disc 390-wide ratio toploader
...I'm told, as Barry indicated, that you get what you pay for from China. I read that Taiwan/China makes most engine and drive parts for the quality Italian Mopeds. They sell the good Mopeds in Asia, and send their junk over here.
What the heck sense would it make for Drake to try and sell Dove or Edelbrock?
November 7 2008, 5:39 AM
Edelbrock's are available from the big speed shops and just about everywhere else.
Dove's, forget if they are good or not (I have one by the way) have gotten too damn expensive.
I bet Drake's is a new casting and that would be great if they are quality.
Scott Drake pumps out a lot of excellent products, and in my opinion has really become a backbone of the Mustang resto hobby.

that Jim Dove must be pissed at Royce because Royce talks shit about Dove every chance he gets. I too have a Dove pump on my 390/'63 F-100. Been there for ten years or more. NO PROBLEM bolting it on, or fitment issues, or ANYTHING ELSE. It just sets there on the front of the engine and does its job!!

I don't know all of the history, but originally Dove parts were cast by an outside firm. I don't know if he's always done his own machining. I bought a Tunnel Wedge from him in the late '90s. It took a year to get because they had decided, after problems, to cast their own parts, and mine was evidently one of the first. I've had no problems with it by the way, although I did have it ceramic coated, which may have helped. My point here is that Dove parts cast by an outside firm (before late '90s) and those cast by Dove really can't be compared.
I do, however, agree with the theory that Dove sends poo parts to Royce because of his negativity.
JMHO,
with several outside foundries who couldn't keep a schedule, damaged Jim's molds, and so on. He finally decided to cast on his own to enable some degree of control.
FWIW, I have always been satisfied with my Dove pieces. If you arrive with a chip on your shoulder, you're asking for further problems. I suppose I'll continue to be satisfied.

Ken, I think you need to buy the Dove parts for Royce then ship them to him. It seems like you always get the best quality and Royce gets the worst LOL. John
Royce what kinda price tag is on the Drake pump?.....

I'm in the market for one and was curious. If you could please report back on it's quality when you get it that would be great. I recently spoke to a guy with a used Dove WP. He was looking for $200 and it "possibly" (his words) needed a rebuild for another $185 from Dove. He wasn't sure LOL. I can almost buy 2 Edelbrocks for that so I passed. Anyway hope the Drake piece is nice.
If it's new it wasn't on display at his booth at SEMA. If i'd known about it i'd have asked.
I made sure to mention to scott that there are Fairlane and Comet and Galaxie guys out there too who would like to buy parts. I don't know if he realizes the scope of the market or has Mustang tunnel vision where non-Mustangs just seem invisible.
Every part they sell is not listed on their web site

Call 1-800-MUSTANG to order. Have the Scott Drake part number handy. Any Scott Drake dealer can sell one to you, which means any place that sells repro Mustang parts.

Have sold a couple. Just recently got them, so don't have any test results from use on a hot summer days drive. But they seem pretty decent. Will probably have one on a dyno engine here within the month, and spin it over 6000, so we'll see how they hold up. I don't anticipate any problems, because if I did, I wouldn't even bother to sell 'em. As some of you know, I tend to be a bit negative on copycat products. Would be very interested to hear if anyone has installed & used, and has any significant feedback yet. I went on trust with Scott Drake. As a dealer, I have found their stuff to be pretty well done, give it a eight or nine out of ten.
The pumps regular price is $139.95, and it's not a high margin item. But if a Forum member wants one, ask & we'll knock 10% off.
Rob is right as we all trust Scott Drake on these. As a dealer I have always found their quality to be top shelf. Not trying to step on Rob, but I will offer the same 10% discount for Forum members too.
