Don't believe...

November 6 2008, 5:38 PM

any kit was ever made for an FE into a Pinto. Had to post some shots of Glidden's old car below. Seems a tube chassis would be the way to go not only to fit an FE but also support the trans/rearend that would be needed and not bend the unibody structure. Even then, this would be a massive and very expensive task for sure!

Here's a good place to start:

I believe the FE is too large without cutting out the firewall.

I believe Tom P measured this up and the FE was too long (and perhaps too wide) to fit without cutting the firewall. It would be kind of cool to get one in there, completely behind the front crossmember for rear weight bias; but then the expectation would be 6 second ET's to match the funny car look.

I built a '72 Pinto....

November 6 2008, 8:30 PM

into which we put a 429SCJ/460. In order to do this, and have the car handle, we cut out the firewall and set the engine back so that only the crank damper was in front of the original firewall line. We also put in a full frame and cage, a 9" Versailles axle, and then chopped the top by 4". The car weighed 2260 with an all-iron dummy engine and C-6. It had 1170 on the rear wheels and had the driver's seat on what had been the rear seat foot space. Interior laid out much like a corvette. happy.gif

I note on re-reading the above that I may not have made things clear! It's possible (just) to put a 460 in a Pinto engine compartment. But all the engine weight sets right on the front wheels. This makes for lousy handling. Moving the engine back gives better access and much better weight distribution. KS

FE Pinto

November 8 2008, 2:58 PM

I has a 427 bolted in my Pinto. When the 289 was out i used my Mustang block mounts to fit it straight in place onto the Herbert and Meek frame mounts. The car already had the firewall butchered for the smallblock Lakewood bellhousing so my FE Lakewood fit. The water pump sat where the rad needed to be so you'd have to maybe mount the rad on a bike rack ahead of the bumper. The small detail of weight distribution is another issue. More than 3/4 of the engine is ahead of the spindles. You'd have a 2500lb car with 2000lbs on the front.

Have a 390 in mine...

but it is a tubing chassis car. Balancer is on balljoint and car balances out pretty good. Thought about putting one in a street Pinto I have using a 4WD pan and a cowl induction scoop to cover for the added engine height, lots of firewall and floor mods would need to be done so I have decided to put in a small block/5spd combo and off the car instead.
