Not great for street use

November 6 2008, 3:30 PM

I have a truck avenger 670 on my Jeep with a 360. It does great off road, especially in off-camber driving. Sucks on the road though. No low end, slow throttle response, and it took a lot of swapping jets to tune the secondaries to where I was happy with them.

I never liked it for street, and if the Jeep were driven on the street more than offroad, I would pick something else.

IMO, I'd remove the bowls and baseplate and check/verify that all machined........

.......surfaces on the main body are flat/true, as well as throttle plate and metering block/plate surfaces. This should be the first step for any new/used Holleys you plan to use, Rod.

It's a Holley, so it'll work great!

If it's not doing well on the street, you need to tune it a bit. I bet it's the off idle and transition that's giving you the problems. Try adjusting the idle screws a bit and see if it's any different. On the primary side, you can change jets to see how it acts off idle. Also, try adjusting the accel circuit with the cams and nozzles. Also, the power valve number can be increased a bit, to help richen it up when the main circuit starts working. For instance, if you're lean at tip in, you can go from a 6.5 power valve to an 8.5 and it may give a little shot until the mains catch up. Anyway, not trying to write a book here, but you can tune that thing for great performance.
