I have a 67 F-250 4wd with the Dana 4 speed. I have been thinking of trying to convert to a 5 speed from a 95-97 F250. Can this be done??? Are there clutch issues, transfer case issues,(mine is divorced)etc.?

Several issues...

As you mentioned your pickup has a divorced T-case, the 5-speed is a married design. The 5 speed has a hydraulic clutch unlike yours. It may be a do-able upgrade with sum other modifications though, someone here who knows more than I should chime in soon.

how about a Clark 280 series ?

November 6 2008, 5:13 AM

JayS, the later model 5 speeds for trucks have the bell and case as one piece, and none are available with an FE pattern, and they are usually married to the T case. If you look at the Clark 280 series, You'll find a trans that looks alot like a NP435, but has five gears. Bell housing is separate and works with either married or divorced T case. Bells are available for the FT, which has the same pattern. My Clark 285V has 6.99/4.35/2.24/1.47/1.00 gears, which drives nice. There are overdrives available, like the NV4500, but their 6.73/3.50/1.67/1.00/.75 ratios suck to drive. There are overdrive Clarks too, but the ratios suck there as well. If you're looking to consume less fuel, run a Clark 285V or 285VHD, and run taller tires or change the axles from 4.11 to 3.5s......highway fuel consumption will be less and you can drive it like a 4 speed plus creeper, instead of driving with a 3 peed plus a creeper, which is how most of the guys run the old trucks with a NP 435. In the Clark, 2nd gear times a 3.5 axle will give more torque than 2nd times a 4.11 axle does in a NP435. Plus, the Clarks are easy to find and usually cheap. Cal

Cal, where do you find them?

I think that may be a good match for my SB 4x4 project. Add the 5 speed with a tall gearset in the diffs

5-speed

I am in the process of installing a NV4500 in my 76 250 4x4 behind a 410 or a 428. I have a friend with this trans and it works great. The GM versions from 1992 to 1995 ratios are 6.34/3.44/1.71/1.00/.73 and the dodge all years and GM from 1996 up are 5.61/3.04/1.67/1.00/.73. The dodge version or the 1996 and newer GM have the right bellhousing pattern the 1995 and older GM have the above listed ratios but the bellhousing pattern is different. Advance adapters makes the adapter to bolt to the ford bellhousing using the dodge or late GM trans. I don't have my notes in front of me but you will need a fixed yoke output with a GM input shaft if I remember right so if you get a 2wd trans from a junkyard you will have to change some things or you can buy a new trans from one of the gear shops that specializes in these swaps and they will set it up for you. i am still looking for a used trans but if I don't find one in the next few months I will buy new.

First we need some oil.............

November 6 2008, 12:46 PM

Guys first off we need a rather large cauldron of oil, we are going to boil Brent in it ! We don't want to cause permanent damage, but we need to boil him pretty good, and then break his kneecaps or something. Junking a Clark is unforgiveable, but we could let him live because he is one of us. LOL

Jay & Ross, look for Clark 280 series in 1 & 1/2 ton or heavier trucks, starting in the mid sixties to now. The trans is still made, it is now sold under the Eaton name. Easy to get parts if you break something. ( I haven't broken anything ). I got all of my stuff from an old F6 or 700 that was being cut up for scrap (!). I paid 250$ for the trans with shifter, bell, fork, clutch and flywheel and starter. Mine was behind a 361FT, but the guy wanted another 250$ for that. You'll have to rebalance the FT 'wheel, and you may wish to lighten it as well, it weighs something like 40# + Mine came with a 13 inch borg & beck cutch. Looking back, I wonder if the 13 inch diaphram from a powerstroke diesel would have fit. The input shaft was 1 & 3/8s with 10 spline, others are available. The FT bell bolts right on to your FE block, you'll need a weird pilot bearing to fit the big trans to the light truck/pass crank.....IIRC the 330MD is the right one. It is nice if you can get the drive shaft, or at least a section of it, the short shaft between the trans and T case will have to have the big truck ( bigger than 1350 ) joint on the tranny end and the 1350 joint in front of the T case. Overall, a nice tranny, the ratio spread is much better than what is offered in the NV 4500, IMO. Why more guys aren't using these is a mystery to me. Cal

You used to could get them with a 5+4 Brown-Lipe auxiliary trans with the 5-speed direct Clark you could box shift. This is a video of a guy box shifting a Binder with a 5 and 4.

Another option

I spotted this on Ebay. Not a bad price. It would allow you to keep your stock trans and just shorten the rear driveshaft. No overdrive allowed while 4X4 is engaged though.
