An update on the (noisy) exhaust issue

I received the larger magnaflows last week. It took quite a bit of work to get them tucked in. I'd say about 20 hours total, grinding off old welds, shortening the pipes 4" etc.

The mufflers came with a female/female fitting as well, so I had to cut one end off and weld another piece of s/s pipe onto the exit end of the new muffler. Cut the hangers off the old mufflers and welded them onto the new ones.

Tapped the floor pan recesses a little as well to clearance things.

Added more (rubber) isolation to the rear hangers.

The net result;. It's quieter but not as quiet as I'd like.

It seems like the main part of the excess noise is coming from the tailpipe exits, now.

So the next plan is to move forward with the trunk insulation and sound proofing. There is not too much there now.

I have the Magnaflow 2-1/2" system on my '68 Mustang. Am disappointed how loud it is. Also, the right and left side pipes that exit the mufflers are not symetrical. The passenger side fits perfect. But no matter how I try, the drive side bears against the shock. My car does not have staggered shocks. Is the poor fit a compromise to also fit staggered shock cars?
I'm considering the OEM style resinators before the exhaust tips.

I'm lucky I guess. Tailpipes seem to be okay. I think this system might be okay for a small block, but big blocks move too much air and overpower the mufflers.

I'll keep you up to date. There is room for small resonators between the collectors and mufflers. I have large tips and cannot ti them at the outlets yet.

An idea crossed me, in that I may eventually de -weld the tips, and make my own resinator which goes inside the tip.

disappointed with my Stangs exhaust then.
Hookers and 3" X 30" pipes on the ends of the headers.
My bro said don't you think it's a tad loud for Main street in Dartmouth.
I told him if he thinks it's too loud roll up the window. happy.gif

I have 3" Bassani muffs....

on my '63 F100. I also have a home-made X-pipe, the muffs are just before the back pan, and the outlets are beyond the pan. Sounds just fine---NOT too loud. My daily driver has a full cat-back Magnaflow with X and it also is just fine. Once again the muffs are clear at the back end, and the outlets are beyond the bumper.

FWIW, I believe the further back the muffs are, the better the quieting, an X is also a great help, and exiting from the perimeter of the car and pointing the tips toward air (not the ground) all help.

I insulated the trunk tonight - improvement

I agree with the thought that when the muffler is moved further back, it helps. Especialy in the case where these bigger mufflers are not droning as much

I insulated the hell out of the trunk tonight. I layed 2 layers of blue skin over the gas tank (I figured it was drumming fron the exhaust noise) and strategic areas around the tail pipes and frame near the pipes.

The I packed the void between the tank and frame with reflectix insulation (foil bubble wrap) and two layers of the same on the floor of the trunk.

I took it for a short drive, and it is makedly quieter.

So I have some more sound insulation to do, as it's pretty easy and it seems to have helped a lot

Have you tried using a rubber/fiber type washer between the fuel tank and trunk pan.......

Those Magnaflows look like a set of glass packs when you look into them. No wonder they crack like they do. As funny as this may seem you might get a better and more mellow sound with a set of Flowmasters. I ran a set of 2 1/2 Flows with the factory 427 manifolds all the way out the back on my old 63 Galaxie. It was a cruiser and I was very happy with the sound, it was just right. Of course the engine was almost stock so that may have kept it mellow as well. JMO

i drove a 67 a little while ago it had a nice 2.5 sustem with flowie 40 or 50;s on it... it sounded like a dream. No resonance , but the mustang is evil that way and resonates a lot. The gas tank idea above mentioned by Rod thinking about resonance is actually quite possible!
