Are any of these starters good ones?

What brands have you guys had good luck with?

It's for my 1974 F100 4X4 with a mild 428 build, so the main thing will be reliability, huge cranking power not needed. I would use a standard factory starter, but the headers I want won't clear a factory starter.

yes, robb mc

i tried a powermaster and it would not fit my combo even though i called powermaster and asked before the purchase, the robb mc starter fit perfectly and works excellent. i do not mind spending a few bucks more for something that works, definately a quality part.

What's it's length?

November 5 2008, 12:54 PM

Is your Powermaster longer or shorter than the factory starter? I need a shorter starter to let the headers fit.

With C-6 and Headers

November 5 2008, 1:09 PM

Powermaster 9506 XS Torque Starter it's smaller than the original for sure but don't know about the length (Insert joke here). I would guess to say yes it is as the original starter is a chunk.

I have Hooker Supercomp headers on the Mach 1. It's a tight fit but I can take it off and put it on without too much trouble and I don't have to drop the headers or anything else.

Starter

November 5 2008, 2:30 PM

Went out and measured a stock and a powermaster. Stock 7 1/2 in, inside flange to end of starter. Powermaster 8 in inside flange to end of starter, but it is 1/2 the diam and sets in a differant place (right up against the block). Hope this helps. jmdjr67

late model starter?

November 5 2008, 4:47 PM

Does anyone know if any of the later model gear reduction factory ford staters work on the fe - even if they only use two of the tree mounting holes? I do know that one of the smaller starters from a six cylinder fords (170ci I think) will fit and work, but it doesnt have a lot of power and you have to use a big battery and big cables will make it go -- and it'll come out without removing any tubes on Hedman 2 1/8" headers -- this was before gear reduction starters were readily available------ thanks
