Offhand, they look to be....

November 4 2008, 10:17 AM

the same chinese rods as are sold under the 'Eagle' and 'Scat' labels. I've used both and they work just fine, although I replaced the supplied bolts in the Eagle set with the ultra premium ARPs that are available. Rods are matched to less than .5 gram and well finished.

I also used these rods. My machinist told me they were identical to the eagles. Well made and balanced. They also came with the 5000 arp bolts. Excellent buy!

They are RPM

November 4 2008, 2:04 PM

Proof that you can clone a clone... The Scat and Eagle were originally cloned from high end H beams like Carillo or Crower. The RPM (CAT is fake Scat, Hawk is fake Eagle) stuff was cloned from Scat and Eagle. No telling whether good or bad - but at least Scat and Eagle have employes that can answer questions and handle issues in a professional manner. Scat makes their own billet cranks as well - putting them a solid leg up on the other importers - - at least they know the definition of straight and round.

Thanks Barry, I was just about ready to buy them. I will just stick with my reconditioned stock rods in my 416 build, only shooting for 5500, maybe 6000 RPM.

I have a set on my bench

November 4 2008, 4:49 PM

I purchased a set of these a couple of years ago, same people.
Because of some delays in the restoration I did not go to install them for about 6 months.
First problem they came in an unmarked box with no torque specs, I contacted mustang depot and they could not give me torque specs, or the exact brand of manufacture, they got it down to one of two possibilities Hawks or RPM.
Too late for a refund.
Mine came with ARP2000 bolts.
My machinest checked the big end for round before pulling them apart(with in 0.0005") than we torqued it up to the spec he came up with for that bolt in my application (428)
which I think was 70 ft lbs and the hole was 0,0025" out of round, so we went a little tighter and it got worse so we statred going less, at 62 ft lbs. the hole was back to its 0.0005" round. Going by Scat and Eagle rod specs with simular bolts this torque is to light and the bolt strech is no where near what it's supose to be.
So I ended up buying a set of the Scat rods, they came individually boxed and torque specs supplied.
You made the right call go with the better parts or not at all! Mike

My machinist said you ALWAYS torque to ARP specs then re-size

your out $125 to resize your new rod's big ends if you want to do it right.

Torque to ARP specs with ARP oil.

thats interesting

November 5 2008, 12:34 PM

i have a set of those rods in my motor right now and both ends needed to be resized, as they were both too small i forget what i torqued them to but they were out of round by a little bit as well before i had them resized and i beleive the machinist resized them with them torqued? i forget exactly but after they got back they were perfect when torqued. the balance on the set was very good as well, i forget the exact specs but they didn't need too much taken off of them

We throught about resizing also

November 5 2008, 2:26 PM

My set was also very close in weight to each other, and the set looked like quality parts, they had the guide sleeves for the caps and the small end was right on.
At the time we throught about resizing them but could not get ARP to give me bolt torque and strech specs, they said even though the rods had there bolts in them the specs had to be obtained by the manufature-and the application it was set up and sized for.
I contacted Hawks and RPM and got specs from both,(took two weeks) RPM spec was closer to making it the 0.0005 they were to start with but the bolt did not have the proper amount of strech as near as we could tell going by specs of other H beam rods using this bolt in a 428 application.
For these reasons and not having time or money to redo the engine if there was a problem I decided to purchase the Scat rods.
I have another 428 motor I hope to build some time in the future and maybe they will end up in there.
It sure was a learning curve.
