Guys a really quick question. The mach one (1969) I am working on came in bags and boxes. While installing a new quarter panel I put the quarter ext on and so forth to get the alignment right and as a after thought put the rear spoiler on just to check things out. How close is this supposed to get to the quarter edge? The one came with the car is 57 inches long and is about 2 inches to short on either side. The 71 in the bay beside it has a repro that is 59 inches. Now I now they are not the same body car but the longer one I think would look better on the 1969. Problem is the one I have for the car is supposed to be the origonal one. Hate to change it if thats the way its supposed to be. Little looking around on the net shows em short also. Thanks. TIM
69 Mach1 did not come from the factory with a rear wing. However I am sure you could find some additional infor on the Boss sight, as they did come with a wing.
I always assumed they did, learn something new. It is a 428 car so was wanting to keep if origonal. But since its not I can put what I want to on it. ( trunk lid already has the holes in it). Thz TIM
Yeah, spoilers and slats were not available on 69 Mach I's but a lot of them got them

As soon as the Boss' were on the lots I will bet that a lot of Mach I's got spoilers and slats. If you had a Mach with no pizazz it would be hard to sell next to all the other stuff out there and dealers would bolt that stuff on to boost sales. My 351W Mach has them and I have a correct 69 M code shaker that I will be adding too (along with a C9OX intake and a C8AF-AD carb!). Somehow a 69 Mach with all the goodies is the perfect visual image of a 60's Ford Musclecar! Hawkrod

As far as I know, the only 69 Mustangs that came from the factory with an optional rear wing were the Boss cars. Same with the front spoilers, rear window louvers ("Sports Slats"), and Magnum 500 wheels. However, adding all this stuff was and still is very popular. For 1970, the louvers and at least the rear wing were a factory option, it may be possible that they were available late in the 69 model year, but I`m just guessing. I`ve owned 2 69 R code Mach 1`s, and 70 R code Mach 1, and 2 70 M code Mustangs, 1 Mach 1, the other was a Sportsroof (fastback). The only one of the 5 that had a factory issued rear wing was the 70 Sportsroof. Like many other, I added the slats and spoilers and wings to 4 of them, and Magnum 500`s to 3. To be honest, now that I`m older, I think the 69-70 Mustang fastback body style looks cleaner without all the "gingerbread", and if I ever buy another one, I will leave it off. If you look at the Marti reports at car shows and EBay, it is pretty obvious that most of these cars came without these accesories.
As for mounting the rear wing, the 69 & 70 FB deck lids are different, the 70`s have an oval shaped cutout of either side for the wings mounting holes and reinforcing bracket. This bracket fits between the wings mounting studs and the outer skin of the deck lid, and also has the trunk hinge bolts going thru it. Since the 69`s came without these cutouts, the mounting studs would go thru the deck lids inner bracing, and most often partially crush the bracing somewhat. Also, the 70 wing was heavier, and often the added weight would prevent the truck from staying open. Some of the later 70`s had a prop rod that fit into a hole in the right 1/4 panel extension to hold it open. I`ve never seen a 69 Boss car with this rod, and my 70 Sportsroof didn`t have it neither.

My first "real car" was a '69 Mach 1 390 4 speed car, and as most everyone agrees, did not come with louvers & air foil. I did add a chin spoiler to my car, but no rear deck stuff. I swapped that car off for a '70 Boss 429 (yes, I'm kicking myself again for not keeping it.......) and I did add slats and both spoilers to it.
A little known fact (and one I noticed back in the day) was that cars with factory-installed window louvers had black anodized window trim while non-louver cars had chrome trim. Boss 429's did not come with factory wings or slats, and as I wanted my car to look "factory" I had my dealer order a full set of the black trim for the Boss. Somewhere out there in high-dollar collector land there is a guy with a Grabber Green Boss '9 who is claiming he has the only factory-louver Boss 429 ever made!
This car has a bunch of stuff that came with it. From what I have gathered it changed hands at least five times ( with nobody running the title through...another nightmare that was!! But got the paperwork straight finally) Evidently everybody bought stuff for the car but never put it on. When I got it there was was a storage building full of stuff that came with it. The car was packed full and a truckload of extra stuff. For instance, there is 3 sets of headlight buckets.... why I dont know. The funny thing is I knew about the car for several months and I already had a small block car, But finally went to look at this one for a parts car for the one I had. I had no idea it was a cobra jet car till saw the vin( Actually saw the shock towers first saw the wrap around supports) and walked around and glanced at the vin. Oh...WOW... The origonal motor is long gone but it came with a 428( the motor is another story) And believe it or not I bought a engine out of a camper special for a spare( I thought it was a 390 or 360..wrong another 428) I dont know if it came with it or somebody put it in there but it had a 1u crank sealed the deal for me. Anyway Its been a blast playing with the car and digging through boxes looking at stuff. metal work is almost done and then the prep starts. Its been like Christmas for grownups over here..
