396 FE?

Does anyone remember which crank, rods and pistons are required? I know H/M and Ford used the 427 blocks with 3.5" stroke. After that it becomes fuzzy. I may need to round up some pieces to build one of these. I know some of the Ford "Veterans" remember this engine.

It'd be a 428 crank right?

I believe they used 427 block with a steel 360 truck crank,I do not know which rods, pistons. Old Ford parts book (HM addin)should fil in the details.

With a 4.230" bore, it would have to be a 3.5" stroke.

Yes, I believe H/M used 361 truck cranks with the turned down snout. I would not be fearful of a 352 crank. The rods and pistons are not in my memory.

I've got blueprints of the rods and pistons, too.

The Vermeersch collection of blueprints has the 396 crank, rods, and pistons. I'll try to remember to post some when I get home.

The mid 60s offered four FE NASCAR engines: 354, 374, 396, and 427.

October 26 2008, 2:52 PM

The 396 crank has a 3.514" stroke.

352/360FE/361FE/359FT/361FT have a 3.500" stroke

The 396 uses the 427 block. The 427 has a 4.2328" bore spec.

354 and 374 info:

Thanks Dave, All good information. I know the 396 would absolutely scream! It would be fun to build one for a street car.

I ran my 62 lite weight Gal.

October 26 2008, 5:25 PM

in C/MP late 60's/ early 70's as a 396 HI RISER...no dynos, just seat of the pants, and a tach....Used MT alum. rods and Venolia pistons...352 CAST crank..(at that time, my drag buddies Carl Holbrook and Ray Piquet swore by the cast crank, lighter, easier on the brgs.. (and cheaper !)..Launched at 7200rpm, shifted at 8200....weighed 3450 plus me for C/MP...normally got beat at the Division 3 events by Paul Mercure, and his "Checkmate" Camero...

John
I think that EVERYBODY normally got beat by Merc in those days. He may not be a household name, but was the only guy I ever met that was competitively running Pro Stock for a while (mid 80's)out of a two car garage. A damned good racer by any measure.

Last I spoke with him he was still running a white Checkmate Camaro as part of a three car team with long time racing buddies Yamarino and Keener - in IHRA Top Stock. I hear that "Big Y" passed away early last year. Don't know the status of the rest of the team - but I should chase them down...
