Engine Reduction Program

My buddy across the street who owns the local speed shop has been bugging me for a month about a guy who wants to buy one of my 427's, has some old NASCAR Galaxies and such for Vintage racing- so I finally go see the guy, he's about 2 miles from my work (about 3 miles from Sears Point- on the same road). I walk in, first thing I see is an old early '70's TransAm Camaro race car (ho-hum.. but very nicely restored) and 3 late 50's Corvetes in various levels of disassembly, and he and his two helpers are working on a frame.... Then I see in the corner, a frickin CHERRY '47 Chief- and I've got on one of those bright red "Indian Motocycle Cafe" shirts I got from Frenchy at Branson- he's grinning back, I tell him I got a couple of those too LOL. Then I see the car he needs the engine for- Holy Shit, Batman- beautifully restored, fully pedigreed by chassis # with the race history and accepted for Vintage racing, drug home from back east at great expense, lavender '63 Galaxie Holman Moody NASCAR team car, driven by... Fireball Roberts.. No shit.. All the Holman Moody stuff is still there, weight jacks, multiple shocks, full-floater rear end, long cast iron 427 headers, everything- except it has an old 390 block dummied up in it, he has 3 cars and one engine. One of the last cars Roberts drove before he died in '64. One of his other '63' Galaxies ran at Riverside, and he has a 3rd one. I've never sold one of my 427's, but man, would I like to see that critter run with one of my boomers in it- I just happen to have one ready to put back together, nice aluminum head '63 block with Ross pistons, Eagle rods 'n such, pretty nice piece- what the hell, I got 7 more of 'em if I let that one go

you gotta do it

I can see where you are coming from. You feel like a parent for a adoption agency. I think if you sell him one it would be going to a great cause. I didn't want to sell my 428 cj motor but the guy had a real 69 shelby 500 and needed a motor for it. He had the car for almost 30 years and put a 427 motor in it way back when and is now restoring it. He was a good guy so I caved in knowing it was going to be put to good use. That and I am going to have Barry R build me a hot rod motor instead. Sell it to him, its all for good !!!

He says he'll run the old Gal like it was built for

Most of the Vintage guys just motor around politely, there's a Darrel Dieringer '63 Merc that's beautiful, but redlined at 5000... Saw a '72 Torino lunch it's Boss 9 last year, left a helluvan oil trail to the garage. There's been an old local type '66 Chevelle running the last few years, as soon as it starts, you can tell it has a big cheater engine- getting sick of watching that. This guy says he'll run it just as fast as it'll go- my kinda guy. Of course this engine is stock size hehehe
Last year they had Ned Jarrett's Fairlane and Petty's Torino at Sears Point, but neither one ran on the rack

Sorta gives you goose bumps huh

I got a big surprise the other day pulling into to my
old home town of Stuart Va. Up the street came David Person's old Merc Cyclone with Leonard Wood at the wheel.
Complete in it's Holman Moody attire (Boss 429 equipped)
The Wood boys have the old car back at the shop in town
and had picked it back up from the Hall of Fame where
it had been stored for many many years---sorta makes the hair on the back of your head stand up.
I spotted the car and, just stoped on main street and rolled down the window to hear it go by.
Leonard just grinned and waved as he went by--
A true Southern Gentelman
