Just wondering if anybody out there has any experience with multi-disc road race clutches. Specifically , what is the pedal effort like? Also do they lend themselves to being street driven. I am considering one for a dual purpose vehicle I am building. Thanks in advance.

Clutches

October 22 2008, 7:56 AM

I just was talking with my 5 speed transmission provider on this yesterday. We are figuring about 850 horse and 800 ft lbs torque on the engine I'm building. He suggested going with a single ceramic clutch since I am primarily street use. It is rated to 900 ft lbs.

He said in his experience if a single clutch disc can be used and the car is primarily street driven it will be an easier car to drive. Also the clutch disc in his case will be the weak link and cost about 120.00. Rather burn a clutch than break a transmission.

I have never used a multi disc set up so I can't give any personal experience with that.

Bunch of stick shift guys with many being very fast street cars. Lots of information available.

This is the stick shift group I run in.

I tried a McLeod dual disc clutch in a late model Cobra Mustang...

that I built up for a friend of mine. It was a lot of work to get right for not a lot of reward. IMHO unless your putting together a 1000+ horsepower engine I would stick to the single disc clutch. The Cobra put out over 400 hp at the rear wheels and the Ford Racing King Cobra single disc clutch that I used to replace it did a nice job of holding the power.
