That is the way I do a new cam for the first cylinder. Then using a P&G dial indicator I recheck to see how close it is when rotating the engine to see the perfect base of the cam lobe.It is usually very close. You can do it with a feeler gauge if no dial indicator is available.

I always adjust mine when the cylinder is at TDC on the firing stroke.

That Crane method is too involved. I start with #1 at TDC, adjust the valves, then rotate the crank 90* and go to the next cylinder in the firing order. Repeat till all 8 are done.

Crane's way is simple but it is a little confusing so

basically what they are saying is to adjust the intake as the exhaust starts to open. Then adjust the exhaust when the intake is closing,I feel if you wait until the intake is almost closed the exhaust is past the true heel of the lobe. You can check this with a feeler gauge by checking it at different closing positions to see when it is the loosest.Exhaust the same way.

Not many people are lucky enough to have a P&G gauge, let alone know what.......

.......it is or looks like, LOL. Took over 30 years to finally get one (FE only barrel), had learned to use my uncle's set in the mid-60s way before I had my driver's license, LOL, Rod.

So what is the model number of the FE gapper?

Ever thought about turning a barrel from aluminum to adapt another gapper to work on your FE?

The P&G Gapper I have is enough, I won't need the other barrels to work on any other......

..........engines and I only have the one car with an FE in it any way. Though I've never used it, I hope it works/fits the Harland Sharp rockers that I use, LOL, if not, it'll fit the stock HR rockers for sure, Rod. BTW, I'll post the part number later when I get home, it should be on the cardboard box it came in.

'Back In The Day'....

October 18 2008, 1:50 PM

my P&G came in a wooden box with inserts for my 427 and my HP 289. My entire tool box was stolen from Brother Lon's house in 1966 and, since P&G quit making tools at about that time, I never got a replacement. Luckily for me, Tom C. still has his. I haven't checked, but I doubt that my Dove HD rockers will fit inside the barrel.
