This is a follow up to a previous thread on 3G alternator mounting. I finally have the engine mostly assembled--Bill Ballinger had asked me to confirm that the 3G would fit in the high-mount position. This pic shows one installed on my 390. Brackets are stock to my '65 galaxie. The alt has to be shimmed very slightly forward, but it didn't interfere with pulley alignment.
it sure fits nice, i have the same alt on both my cars and they replaced the original perfectly. i did not even have to shim mine, it sure makes a nice update.
Thanks! That's next, because my old 55A isn't happy with that electric fuel pump

I cleaned all of the terminals and I still get a wink from the alt light when it starts. I am going to replace the battery too, Bobby Spears suggested it might be reaching the point of sulphation that it is leaning on the alternator too hard. At the same time it is going to get 135C wiring in the charging circuit.
Is it compact enough to fit into a high mount '65 Galaxie without shimming?

I am trying to get all of my support systems up to snuff, because the engine I will be going in with will be using a Duraspark with an MSD box. I want to get all of this worked out before I convert it. I have two dizzys, one with an iron gear, and one with a bronze one for a roller cam. I will probably convert the 352 to electronic first before putting the "new motor" in so all of the bugs are worked out.
I just installed it yesterday and I don't see any size difference than my original mustang alternator.
If you need any measurements, let me know. Measure twice, buy once! I have two electric fans that draw 30 amps together when on and it charged fine with them on.
That is a nice fit (better than my PowerMaster). What is the output and where did you buy it? Also, is it a true 1 wire or do you need to supply a switched 12vdc source to excite the field? ww
Warren, Mine is a 130amp one that I got from a 3.8 windstar van at the pick and pull. One of the cool things about them is that you can take out the three bots that hold it together and re-clock the back so that the connections face whatever direction works best for your installation. It is not a true one-wire. You take one of the three small leads and connect it to a switched 12v source (solenoid) and you jump one of the other ones to the main power lead. Very simple to hook up. The stock v-belt pulley fits perfectly.
My F-100 has one in the low-mount position

got mine from pa perfomance and it looks identical to that one and the others listed. me thinks they just upped the regulator or just referbed it and charged me alot of money, doh!
Yours looks great. I have had a small problem with mine since install and that is belt squeal on start up. After the first few seconds it doesn't squeal anymore. However it is very embarrassing on cruise night. It charges great and the pulleys appear to be lined up.
I have tightened the belt and loosend the belt to no avail.
Any Ideas?
I took mine off of a 94 or 95 Mustang GT 5.0
I think one v belt is not enough for these alternators. Two belts came standard on many applications. I think it slips going from zero to something in a very small time, but does not under load because the rotation tends to tighten it.
Check the diameter of the alternator pulley. If you've installed a smaller v-pulley it could cause the problem. The alternator you have would have came originally with a serpentine belt which has quite a bit of grip. The pulley I use is just under 3 inches diameter and no problems. Also Checker Auto now sells Goodyear belts and they seem quite "grippy", you might try that first.
