Response to Since his 'idol'.... |
| Back in the early 80's I was down in PSE's general area on business, so I decided to drop in and see what the place looked like. Big shop; very clean. Just Paul there at the time. I spent about an hour and a half looking over his parts and talking about FE's. The impression I got from this visit was that he was just a bit frustrated at not doing better, or rather being more recognized, than he was. Certainly his thinking was a bit ahead of its time, and the products I saw appeared to be first rate.
I just think his timing was unfortunate. We all know how the FE hobby sucked back then in comparison to today. If PSE materialized now, or even in the late 90's, things might have been different.
I can't speak about his later business dealings or personal situations because I simply don't know the facts, and I'm not going to regurgitate rumors. He may have had a chip on his shoulder, but he was courteous and professional to me the whole time I was there, even though he knew I wasn't buying.
He asked me to keep an eye open for a '66-'67 Fairlane post sedan for sale back in my part of town, with a cash bounty if I could hook him up. That was his preferred car to build a racer. Never did find one for him, and I'm not sure if he ever got one elsewhere. |
