I think what I'll do is start a little project called Cast Piston Low Lift racing, which I'll doink around with until I get into my D/Stock clone Mercury.

Sounds like you are pretty well set for building an inexpensive cruiser engine. The only part I might start looking for is a pair of early small chamber heads to bring up the compression on any short crank combos. I have a few things to do to the Ranchero first in preparation.
