I have the same Mercury. Before you rebuild the rear end, do a flush job
and replace fluid with a high quality Lucas,etc... mixed with some good 90wt.
Mine still purrs down the highway smooth as can be 70mph @ 2900 rpm with a 3:00
highway gear, but then I get my kicks at 4500 rpm on a open highway.
