Cam bearings do not fail catastrophically; a loss of oil pressure is usually your only clue...
Mine wiped out in the break-in period for the cam. I watched the oil pressure diminish from start-up until it stabilized at about 50 lbs over 2000 and about 10 at idle. When I took it down the cam was actually bent between 1 and 5 bearings.
(I installed 2,3,4 with the holes up - a brain slip as I rolled the engine upright on the stand to drive those three in place).
The indicator for correct bearing positions is the #1 bearing, it will only go in one way.
After I replaced the cam and bearings, the same engine has 75lbs over 2000 and about 35 at 850 idle w/HV pump at 190°F oil temp.
