Anyone who has known me for a while knows how big I am on varnished teak. I think it's worth the trouble, and several of my buddies do too. I've seen their boats and the golden toe rails speaks well for the effort that has been put into it. Yes, I know there are alternatives, and I've been looking into these for some time, and I actually think I have finally found something that looks better than varnish on teak (or mahogany).
As for the Bristol Finish (a two part polyurethane with lots of UV inhibitors), I've seen it advertised in some prestigious publications, and I also see some very prestigious firms are using it too. It's probably a very good product, but I have no experience with it. My experience with varnish has been almost all positive.
