Bruce Martin is continuing with his 38’ Commander restoration and upgrade project. This is such an extensive project, it’s hard to call it a restoration, because there is a lot of very finely designed and crafted custom work.
With woodwork like this, there is going to be a steady stream of rubber-necking gawkers looking at this boat ! It’s just spectacular. These photos show some of the last stages of finishing the (new) teak toe rail. Note the dogbone fastening technique utilized to keep the pieces of wood together. Of special note, these dogbones don’t go all the way through the piece, but only extend down about half way. No need to make it easy, eh Bruce, ha ha. Actually Bruce did it this way to control splitting and a natural tendency for wood to make gaps that water can get into. All of this is bonded with epoxy. Quite remarkable to see workmanship that is better than furniture grade, going into a toe rail!
For any readers of the forum who may not know about Bruce’s project, here are some other threads that outline the boat, the motor work, the bow pulpit addition, the teak toe rail, launching, etc. It ‘s quite an awesome execution.
