DOes no one know where this tailshaft is from ? Its behind a 64 close bolt pattern toploader , but I dont think its origonal.the numbers on the tailshaft are 78ZY-7AO40 . The shifter is blocking rest of it , so Im not sure if there is a -A or -D at end but I assume so . Im just stumped by the first 4 numbers. there is also a big casting od 28-8-80 on side and a oval mark that says Aecho in Mexico under P/N . SO any ideas what Im looking at here?

no answers?

I take it the tailshaft housing is difficult to identify? Is there anything else I need to supply for identification? I just know the numbers are not on Kees site so I have no idea where to look . any help so I can get this project running?

First, that is not a tail shaft number. Tail shaft numbers have -7060- as part of the number, not -7A040-. And I have never seen a Ford tail shaft with a number on them out of over a hundred thousand transmissions that I have owned.

Second, the number given does not look correct to me. "Y" in the fourth position usually indicates Lincoln, but that is in stark contrast contradictory to "Z" in the third for Mustang. Only thing I can tell for sure about the number is that it is 1978 or later and is on a foreign built part, not U.S. built.

Based on that, I would look to Europe for your answer. Ford may have used "Z" and "Y" together there with a different meaning than in the U.S.

Fiesta?

December 22 2008, 7:10 AM

First off xxxx-7AO40-x is a tail housing part number. I wonder if this might be a Ford Fiesta transmission? I haven't found much but the Mexico stamping may suggest a Fiesta?

THanks for the responces guys . Ive looked and relokked at part and the numbers are correct . I think that maybe it is from mexico , but Ill keep looking . should I get a new tailshaft if I want to use this for my 65 galaxie , or if it is the right depth tailshaft will it work ? It is rebuilt , I just want to make sure I can sue it for my application. IF you need a photo , let me know .

Tailshaft numbers

December 28 2008, 9:06 PM

Let me guess... that's an aluminum tailshaft? I checked a SROD in my cellar and it has a D8DR-7AO40 casting number on the tailshaft.

The 1980 date code (28-8-80)indicates it can't be a toploader part.

Are there signs of a deleted turret shifter?

No , steel part and it is matted to the toploader case and Toploader is 27" long . the hurst shifter is for a 64-65 galaxie And im thinking this tailshaft housing is for a galaxie or annother full sized car with a toploader, and from what others say on here and elsewhere it may have come from either a europe car or more than likely from central or south america. It has the 28 splines and looks good so I guess im just going to have to use it . My question , Mostly to Doug since you helped find the bushing numbers . snce this is a small block toploader with the HEH-G, but with a long tailhousing , am I going to need this bushing I got that you gave me a P/N for or am I going to have to just use a regular bushing ? I am getting rid of the truck bellhousing and have got a 64-65 galaxie bellhousing with the close bolt pattern so I don't have to drill it out and it is the shorter than the truck bellhousing. I dont know if I can use a 11 or 11.5 clutch on it though . THe PN on it is -4848339.
Again , its going behind a 428 , but is the small block trans.
Thanks again and sorry for the constant qestions , Im just glad there is a place to get help. Not many guys I know who ran these cars back in the day that actually worked on them first hand .

SROD

Single Rail OverDrive. I had one in a '82 Mustang GT that I bought new. It's an internal shift, aluminum and look like a Toploader. When you bought this transmission, what was it advertised as or did you pick it up at salvage? Do you have any pictures of it? It sure sounds like a bastardized set up? A Toploader should install with virtually no issues.
