Have a 69 5.0 HO with a AOD. all in a 56 ford runs great but after 3rd it doesn't get into OD. Trans and motor have been sitting for about 3 years. Did take the pan off and serviced the filter, looked really clean inside. Haven't driven much since the first run, have a couple of water leaks to attend to, but would be nice to find a simple solution. Help please...Gerry

Try the 1d1 shuffle, where you start in D, once it hits 2nd, pull back into manual 1...you have to be over 20 mph. This will hold 2nd.
if you decelerate, or take your foot off the throttle, the trans will produce ENGINE BRAKEING effect if the OD band is good. Check this first,.
If the car just COASTS and the engine is allowed to return to idel...then the band is probably fried. Inversly, if you do have EB, the VB is probably just gummed up.

You suggested 3 years...i would highly suspect the VB and GOV be gummed up with varnish and needs a good cleaning...it happens when it sits.
