Aluminum Thunderbird mx bell?

If anyone has this FE Bell Loose could you please set in on a flat surface engine side down and measure the depth from the transmission mounting surface to the engine mounting surface and the ID of the 'big hole' on the back.

Many thanks,

John

What I posted were not measurements taken off of a housing, but are the actual print dimensions.

Dennis

print dimensions?

January 30 2008, 4:35 PM

Where do you get print dimensions?

Do you have them for other bell housings?

Would you like me to pay part of the cost to scan them in to a computer so they can be shared?

Kind Regards,

John

(in this case are the C1 and C5 Bells the same?)

that stuff can not...

mmerlinn is a great contributor to Ford Transmissionology (not a word - don't care). I reviewed his work before i asked. The page you recommended is a C4/C5 page. I would like to see one as complete for FM/FMX/MX transmissions as those are the bellhousings i am asking questions about.

It is my intention to adapt an FE-FMX Bell to the front of a C4, a C5 or an AOD (Just watch me!) to jamb the works into a mustang II or some other lightweight.

I'm not into paying $500 for an FE to C4 conversion bell if i can scrounge an MX/FMX bell and turn an adaptor plate myself. I'll post pictures when i'm done.

I have no doubt whatsoever you can do what you planned.

I myself have installed a C4 onto a Toyota engine.

Why not adapt a C4 bell housing?

Hard to center the bell.

You have a valid point. I felt this might be easier.

I thought about using a C4 small block Bell onto the Back of an FE with an adaptor plate but it's a whole other challenge to get the two sets of dowel pins located correctly with respect to each other and the crankshaft/input shaft..

The FMX bell is already located by dowel pins to the block which in turn locates the transmission concentrically at the pump to the crankshaft. It's a given that the indexing hole in the bell is located concentric to the crank. I have to do very little work to make a plate correctly at that point.

Unless you have really good drawings and i do a CAD thing to send to a CNC shop (and get the 4 dowel pins right) after hours i think the other approach is much more frugal.

Further, I require a smaller piece of stock material. To get the two centers set up i can turn the stepped wafer shaped adaptor plate on a brake lathe or give it to a high school kid in metal shop class or something else low tech. Once i have a stepped ring the right thickness i can transfer the bolt holes with transfer punches and i'm done.

It will come out of the lathe with an excessive OD to pick up the furthest FMX pattern bolt but then i'll trim off what i can't use or don't need. It's a $100 answer instead of a $500 answer.

That's why..

John

Right here.. Same Picture, $695 + shipping.

Wrong way - thanks, but no thanks.. unless you have a spare you would like to donate.

I want $100 or less... I'm pretty sure i can do it too. My cost will be lower than the scrap weight of the method you suggest.
