Wheel painting

October 22 2008 at 8:40 PM
Peter R (Aus)

A couple of questions regarding wheel painting. I've been offered a set of wheels for the exxy. They have been powdercoated in what I'm told is metallic silver. Unfortunately they look more like a flat grey undercoat. The surface finish is good it is just the lack of silver/metal in the colour.

Has any one had any experience with painting over powdercoat and what sort of surface preparation is required. I am told that paint won't stick to powdercoat. It is not really cost effective to have the wheels blasted. The powdercoat also hides a lot of the surface imperfections. Look forward to hearing people's experiences and views.

Regards
Peter

Well... Powdercoating sure has its place and is all the rage...

I think folks would powdercoat their pets if they could...

I have a friend that can barely afford to eat yet he gets his wheels powdercoated at 40 bucks a pop... so he doesn't haveta paint them at 5 bucks a can every two years...

Go figure...

If you have DUPLICOLOR paints down there... they make some EXCELLENT colors and formulas that duplicate the finest of natural wheel colors... from dark greys to billets to vibrant colors just for wheels, or other body colors you can use.

Even if the wheels are indeed powdercoated... there must be a way to scuff them and get a primer to adhere and then a top coat.  Even if ya spent 20 bucks on three different primers and some top coat... you'd be way ahead of the game and probably pretty excited over your accomplishment.

The temps and extremes they are exposed to are probably not that radical either, and even if ya gotta touch them up every year or two... shouldn't be a problem.

My .02 cents... whatever that equates to in Auzzie dollars...

My best,

I would paint over the powder coat

October 23 2008, 2:27 AM

I just read an article comparing powdercoat to paint and it said that unlike paint, it is almost impossible to remove the powdercoat. So just blasting them might not cut it.

Plus who knows what kind of finish you will end up with when you remove the p/c.

Powdercoating is easily removed

October 23 2008, 6:41 AM

You can blast it but that's the hard (and expensive) way. Powdercoated paint breaks down under conventional strippers just like paint does. It's a bit more of a mess to remove once broken down, cuz it's stringy and sticky, but really not much harder to deal with than paint.

Soda blasted and powder coated pictures.

October 23 2008, 1:45 PM

I had my wheels soda blasted and powder coated. I was told that you could paint the wheels after powder coating. For example the paint shop told me that they could paint the little black squares back on my wheels, but I opted to not to.Powder coating does fill in some curb rash. First picture is before coating.

Second picture is after.
