it really isn't too much of a hassle, especially when flying AA, which I believe is Terminal 6 and closest to the airport exit. From there, a drive up the 405 shouldn't take you more than 30-40 minutes to get into the SF Valley, where I recommend you find a hotel since the show is in Van Nuys.

I use Orbitz.com when I travel on leisure, just to find hotels and prices, then book at the property's own website once I find the one I like.

Also, you should find tons more options for flying LAX. If you still want to avoid it, also consider LGB (Long Beach). John Wayne will just add to your driving time on the ground and you are restricted on arrival/departure times due to the noise abatement (aka, snobby Newport Beach).
